The Chargers, after getting to the playoffs in each of the past two years under coach Jim Harbaugh, entered the 2026 season with high expectations. The perceived upgrade at offensive coordinator from Greg Roman to Mike McDaniel served only to increase the buzz that the Bolts could get back to January and, unlike 2024 and 2025, win some games.
They enter Week 6 at 0-5. And they’ll face the 4-0 Chiefs in Kansas City. With the bye week next, could a loss result in McDaniel’s exit?
There has already been chatter that a change could be made, with former Jets and fellow former Dolphins coach Adam Gase possibly taking over. Gase currently serves as the passing game specialist with the Chargers.
Today’s game will be a factor. Through five losses, the Chargers have scored 14, 14, 16, 23, and 17. Another lackluster showing, coupled with a loss, could be the end of the road for McDaniel.
A win would change everything. But history isn’t on L.A.'s side. Via NBC Sports research, only three teams have entered a game at 0-4 or worse and have beaten a team that was 4-0 or better since the merger. The 0-5 Rams beat the 4-0 Raiders in 2002, the 0-5 Giants beat the 5-0 Buccaneers in 1979, and the 0-4 Packers beat the 4-0 Cowboys in 1975.
