Continuing their focus on defense and size in the frontcourt will be essential for Indiana, after an early end to 2026 postseason run. Though they fell to the eventual champion Las Vegas Aces in the first round of 2026 playoff action, the Indiana Fever front office was ready to turn the page soon after the final game of their 20WNBA campaign. For much of the season, the Fever were one of the most potent offensive units in the league.
Defensive Struggles Exposed in the Playoffs
The regular season concluded with Indiana as the ninth-most defensively efficient team in the WNBA, the only playoff entrant to finish in the bottom-half of league standings in that category.
That weakness was exploited to the fullest by the Vegas Aces in a three-game series, with reigning MVP A’ja Wilson setting up shop in the paint, and the Fever unable to contain the high-volume perimeter shooters.
In her exit interview, Indiana Fever General Manager Amber Cox confronted these issues squarely. Working towards extending a contract to superstar guard Caitlin Clark and acquiring unrestricted free agent Kelsey Mitchell, Cox recognized that a “combined effort to add some depth and a little more defense to the overall roster is a must.”

GM Amber Cox Identifies Key Offseason Priorities
Cox identified two areas of emphasis for the offseason: backup depth in the frontcourt and strong perimeter defenders.
Backforward Depth “I think, moving forward, the front we gotta make sure we got some depth behind AB or maybe at the four,” Cox said.
Perimeter Defense: “And I think just we need some more production out of that wing spot. And again, this gets back to like the defensive end of the floor, we got to make sure we’ve got people on the perimeter that can shut down some of these elite scorers in the league… The overarching theme is we need to get better on the defensive end of the floor.”
“As far as when the season ended and now as we head into next season, defense is probably our biggest focus,” Caitlin Clark said in her own exit interviews.
What’s Next for the Indiana Fever?
As free agency approaches, fans and experts have begun to puzzle out which players the franchise will target to bring stability to a core of Mitchell, Boston and Clark. Because of general manager Amber Cox’s emphasis on defensive players and down low help, the Fever are likely to be busy and tactical this offseason.
