Finals will be remembered for Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese’s iconic, world-breaking display against the Golden State Valkyries.
Overcoming the pressure of a 1-1 series tie, Reese put on a clinic inside with an incredible 30 point, 16 rebound, 3 assist, 2 block effort on 62.5% shooting. Her physicality on the glass and scoring prowess in the paint was matchless in playoff history as Reese powered the Dream to a 79-65 victory and a deadlock in the series heading into Atlanta on Monday.
Any other player would be happy with a stat line of this magnitude, which would turn Reese in to just the fifth player in WNBA history to put up a 30 point 15 rebound game in the postseason – behind Candace Parker, Lisa Leslie, and Louisa Harris.
But a high-octane third quarter exploded the night and a combustible emotional explosion that took everyone — including pundits and even watching fans — by complete surprise.
The failure to run a play without of us, without the basketball, when it appeared she wasn’t getting it when she needed it, and moments after tumbling to the court as a result of a collision, Reese burst into a loud, protracted scream of rage on the floor, calling loudly for the ball and in body language, threatening to turn around and walk off — moments that recalled much of the criticism the team was taking after its first setback and immediately rekindled speculations that a problem of chemistry could make a title impossible for the Dream.
Thankfully, that breaking point of friction was the very spark Atlanta needed. Rather than letting the rift widen, the confrontation rallied the team. Her teammates acclimated to her aggressive need and provided her the rock during a resounding 18-4 binge that basically sealed the deal for the road team.
Veteran coaches and players expertly handled the volatile situation, channeling Reese’s combative rage into solid court performance instead of destructive behavior.
So what should have been a PR catastrophe and locker-room rupture of epic proportions has become, instead, a gritty story of perseverance and perseverance.
As the WNBA Finals move back to Georgia, Reese’s emotional hysteria has been, in equal parts, the powerful, unrelenting soul that makes her a once-in-a-generation player, and the stick of dynamite that the Dream must delicately diffuse. If Atlanta can keep all that passion focused on bringing down championships, Reese’s historic night may be the moment that pushed her team over the edge.
