Some of us are old enough to remember when Texas was the No. 1 team in the country a few weeks ago.
One odd meltdown of a loss to Oklahoma, and a way-too-tight loss to Florida later – both games were 27-24 – and now there’s no more room to make a mistake.
Yes, the College Football Playoff can do whatever it wants, but it has yet to take an at-large team with more than two losses that didn’t play in a conference championship.
2025 Texas went 9-3 and didn’t get in. This year’s version realistically has to run the table to get in. Meanwhile, Ole Miss has only lost to Florida, and considering Oklahoma is struggling, and Georgia and Auburn come to Oxford, it’s in solid shape if it can win this.
Ole Miss vs Texas: Quick Hits
- Ole Miss closes with four of the last five games at home, with the one road game in the middle of the run at Oklahoma.
- Texas gets a home game against Mississippi State next, and then closes with three of the last four games on the road.
- This is only the ninth time these two have played, and it’s the first time they’ve met since Texas joined the SEC. The Rebels won 44-23 in 2013, but Texas won the first meeting 53-14 in 1912 and is 6-2 in the series.

Why Ole Miss Will Win
Get some early momentum.
Texas was actually up 17-7 on Oklahoma, took an early 10-0 lead on Florida, and lost both games.
Texas is going to come out hot. It’ll try opening it up a bit and get things moving its way. Ole Miss has to get through the early storm, and if it can come out and do what it does – bam, bam, bam … Trinidad Chambliss hits a few quick passes, and the running game has a little success – that would define the narrative.
Why Texas Will Win
Quit being so freaking afraid.
Ole Miss gives up 237 passing yards per game – the defense can be torched. Let Arch Manning throw, make mistakes, and then come back and keep throwing. Crank up the tempo and take the high-octane fight to the Rebels. Chambliss is great, and the rest of the Ole Miss offensive stars are wonderful, but Texas has more talent.
It’s okay to win this 45-40. It’s okay not to play like every moment is overscripted. You have the better team, Texas – go have fun, and see what happens.
Ole Miss vs Texas Prediction, Betting Lines
Ole Miss will force Texas to stop being so … Texas.
Trinidad Chambliss will be wonderful, but make him do everything. The Texas run defense will hold up, there will be a nice mix and balance on offense, and Arch will be just fine.
Texas 30, Ole Miss 26
