Two police vehicles were damaged after masked youths threw stones and bottles.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said officers in Londonderry dealt with public disorder in the Creevagh Heights area on Friday.
The force said two police vehicles were damaged after young people, some of whom were masked, threw various items including stones and bottles.
Crowds dispersed at around 11.30pm and no further reports of disturbance were received overnight, the force said, adding that no injuries were reported.
Superintendent Claire Hamilton said: “Our engagement with local representatives around these issues is ongoing as we work to keep everyone safe, including our own officers who continually put themselves in harm’s way to protect the community.
“An investigation has been launched, and evidence gathered last night will be reviewed in order to identify those involved.
“Anyone with information can contact police on 101, quoting reference 72 of 23/10/26.”
Alliance Derry~Londonderry spokesman Philip McKinney said: “No one deserves to have their safety put at risk simply for doing their job, not least the police officers on the frontlines who are tasked with protecting the public and keeping us safe.
“This type of behaviour is utterly reprehensible and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.
“It’s never acceptable, and it is rejected by the vast majority of the community who want calm and for the police to be allowed to carry out their work.”
