Dodgers’ playoff crowds spark debate over attendance and empty seats
The Los Angeles Dodgers drew attention during the 2026 postseason after fans noticed empty seats at Dodger Stadium despite announced crowds exceeding 50,000 for some playoff games. The discussion gained momentum as the team faced elimination against the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Championship Series.
Resale ticket prices, high temperatures during an earlier playoff game, and the Dodgers’ record regular-season attendance added context to the debate.

The announced crowd for Game 3 was 50,708, according to published game coverage. Compared with Dodger Stadium’s listed capacity of 56,000, that figure was about 90.5% of capacity, leaving a difference of 5,292 seats.
However, announced attendance and the number of people visibly sitting in the stands at a particular moment are not identical measures. Attendance figures alone cannot establish how many fans were inside the stadium throughout the game.

The Brewers won Game 3 by 4 runs
Milwaukee defeated Los Angeles 6–2 in Game 3 on October 14. The Dodgers took a 2–1 lead in the sixth inning, but Jake Bauers’ 2-run homer and Garrett Mitchell’s subsequent solo homer put Milwaukee ahead in the seventh.
The Brewers added insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings to secure a 3–0 NLCS lead. Los Angeles faced elimination as footage of open seats at Dodger Stadium fueled discussion about the crowd.

The Dodgers had lost the first two games
Before arriving in Los Angeles, the Dodgers lost Games 1 and 2 of the NLCS in Milwaukee. The Brewers won the opener 2-1 on October 11, then took Game 2 by a 7-4 score the following day.
Those defeats put Los Angeles behind in the best-of-seven series before the teams reached California. The Game 3 loss extended Milwaukee’s lead to three games, making the next matchup an elimination game for the Dodgers.

Regular-season attendance reached a record
The Dodgers announced a franchise-record regular-season attendance total of 4,034,219 for 2026, according to the team’s September 25 report. That figure surpassed the previous franchise record of 4,012,470, set by the club during the 2025 season.
Los Angeles averaged 49,805 fans across its 81 regular-season home games. The club also reported 40 crowds of at least 50,000 and 14 sellouts, providing important context for the debate about attendance during the playoffs.
Interesting fact: The Dodgers drew more than 4 million fans in the 2026 regular season. They set a franchise record with 4,034,219 total attendees, averaging 49,805 fans per home game across the season.

Dodger Stadium, home of the Los Angeles Dodgers, has a listed capacity of approximately 56,000 spectators. Its large seating layout means a crowd exceeding 50,000 can still leave some sections visibly unoccupied, depending on where fans are seated.
The announced attendance for Game 3 was roughly 5,300 below that capacity. That gap helps explain why photographs and video could show open seats even though the reported crowd exceeded 50,000.
Interesting fact: Dodger Stadium opened in 1962. The ballpark welcomed 52,564 fans for its first game on April 10, when the Dodgers faced the Cincinnati Reds.

Resale ticket prices fell before Game 3
Ticket prices on the resale market dropped as the Dodgers returned home trailing Milwaukee in the NLCS. Reuters reported that the lowest available resale price for Game 3 fell from $167 to $97, including fees, by early October 14.
The reported change amounted to a decline of about 42%. These were resale-market prices, not a statement of the Dodgers’ official ticket prices, and the figures do not establish why individual fans did or did not attend.

Game 4 ticket prices dropped further
With Los Angeles facing elimination, resale prices for Game 4 also declined. Reuters reported that the lowest available price for a ticket to the October 15 game fell from $156 on October 11 to $77 after the Dodgers’ Game 3 defeat.
The figures reflected prices listed on the resale market, where costs can change with demand and availability. They do not prove that ticket prices caused the empty seats shown in footage from the previous game.

Game 4 attendance fell below 50,000
The Dodgers hosted Milwaukee again on October 15, with the season at stake after three consecutive losses. Published game records listed attendance at 49,104, which was 1,604 fewer than the 50,708 announced for Game 3 the previous night.
The Brewers won 6-4, completing a four-game sweep and advancing to the World Series. The two attendance figures show that the announced crowd declined across the final two home games of the series.

October heat had affected an earlier playoff crowd
Attendance had already attracted attention during the Dodgers’ postseason before the NLCS began. On October 3, Los Angeles hosted the Atlanta Braves in Game 1 of the National League Division Series, with the announced crowd reaching 50,194.
The game began at 1 p.m. local time, and the temperature reached 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The Associated Press reported visible empty seats amid the extreme heat, offering another example of attendance becoming a topic during the Dodgers’ 2026 playoff run.

The Dodgers beat Atlanta in the opening game
Los Angeles defeated Atlanta 5-3 in Game 1 of the National League Division Series on October 3. The matchup drew 50,194 spectators, an announced attendance figure below Dodger Stadium’s approximate 56,000-seat capacity.
The game took place during an unusually hot October afternoon, with temperatures reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The result and conditions were documented separately from the later NLCS attendance debate, although both games featured visible gaps in the stands.

The Brewers advanced after sweeping Los Angeles
Milwaukee completed its NLCS sweep on October 15 with a 6–4 victory at Dodger Stadium. The Brewers overcame an early 4–0 deficit to win their first National League pennant and reach the World Series for the first time since 1982, when they represented the American League.
The result ended Los Angeles’ bid for 3 consecutive World Series championships. It also concluded the Dodgers’ home postseason schedule after their final 2 games drew renewed attention to announced attendance and visibly unoccupied seats.
