October 1526: First Prague-Vienna mail route established

A political masterstroke by the Habsburg dynasty

The establishment of a regular postal service in the heart of Europe was not a response to the needs of ordinary people, but rather a calculated political move. Following the tragic death of the King of Bohemia in 1526, his successor, Ferdinand I of Habsburg, needed to consolidate his influence in Prague.

In October 1526, he therefore ordered the establishment of the first regular courier connection between Prague and Vienna. He entrusted the management of this strategic communication link to the prominent Taxis noble family. The new couriers had just one task: to transport secret royal decrees and state correspondence quickly and securely.

A fresh horse every two hours

The new system was based on a network of postal stations positioned along the main regional route, approximately every 15 to 20 kilometres apart. At each station, the rider simply exchanged his tired horse for a fresh one and continued on his way. This enabled the postal service to deliver messages in record time.

Interestingly, the stations were often established in small, undefended villages. Large, fortified towns refused to open their gates to express couriers travelling at night and were unwilling to submit to the direct authority of imperial postmasters.

A legacy that has endured for five centuries

Although the service faced financial difficulties and temporary interruptions in its early years, the mounted courier system soon became an essential backbone of communication throughout the Habsburg monarchy. The connection between Prague and Vienna established in 1526 thus permanently transformed the flow of information across Central Europe.

Czech Post is also commemorating the 500th anniversary of this event with the release of a commemorative miniature sheet of postage stamps, symbolically depicting the first royal messenger on horseback against the backdrop of a historic postal station.
