Steven Gerrard has admitted that he would have gained another couple of hundred matches as a manager before accepting the Aston Villa job in 2021. Speaking to Sky Bet, the former Liverpool captain reflected on a career decision that ultimately ended with his dismissal.
Steven Gerrard Makes Aston Villa Admission That Exposes His Biggest Mistake
Gerrard spent three and a half years at Rangers, winning the Scottish Premiership in 2021 and ending Celtic’s run of nine consecutive league titles. His success earned him the Villa opportunity, but Premier League management presented challenges he had not fully experienced in Scotland.
“I probably would have done more games in Scotland,” Gerrard admitted, explaining that he might have sought another position before stepping into English football’s top flight.
Why did Gerrard struggle at Aston Villa?
Villa dismissed Gerrard in October 2022 after just two wins in their opening 11 league matches that season. His overall record stood at 13 victories from 40 games, leaving the club dangerously close to the relegation zone.
The pressure exposed weaknesses in his approach. Villa struggled to maintain consistent performances, while expensive attacking talent, including Philippe Coutinho, failed to deliver the sustained improvement the club needed.
Gerrard described management as considerably more brutal than playing, warning that results and confidence could unravel extremely quickly. He advised aspiring coaches to accumulate as much experience as possible before accepting major opportunities.
However, he acknowledged the difficult choice managers face when an attractive offer arrives, particularly when they fear another opportunity might never come.
How does Unai Emery’s Aston Villa blueprint expose Gerrard’s shortcomings?

Unai Emery’s subsequent achievements at Aston Villa highlight the importance of a clear tactical identity and disciplined recruitment. Appointed in October 2022, Emery transformed the team’s performances and secured European qualification in his first season.
His approach established clearer responsibilities in possession, aggressive pressing triggers and carefully coordinated defensive positioning. Villa’s high defensive line, combined with rehearsed attacking movements, gave the squad a recognisable structure that Gerrard struggled to establish consistently.
Emery’s recruitment and player development have reinforced that progress. Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Martínez and Ezri Konsa became important components of a side capable of competing at a higher level, while the manager’s European experience helped Villa approach demanding fixtures with greater tactical discipline.
Gerrard’s admission therefore reflects more than insufficient experience. His Villa tenure exposed the gap between motivating talented players and building a system that consistently produces results.
Experience might have helped him recognise tactical problems sooner, but it cannot automatically create a coherent playing identity. Emery demonstrated how detailed preparation, adaptable formations and clear recruitment priorities can reshape a club’s fortunes.
For Villa, the contrast remains significant: Gerrard arrived with an outstanding playing reputation and promising managerial credentials, while Emery brought a proven framework for organising a Premier League side. Gerrard’s reflection suggests he now recognises how much more preparation that transition required.
