The International Monetary Fund has warned that a sudden crash in AI stock prices could send shockwaves through the entire global financial system. The organization identified an AI share correction as one of three near-term threats to worldwide market stability, alongside rising government borrowing costs and AI-powered cyber attacks.
The scale of concentration tells the story. The “Magnificent Seven” tech companies now make up more than 35% of the S&P 500, up from just 12% a decade ago. Their combined market value also rose over 50% in the past two years alone. A sharp drop in any of these stocks could therefore drag down the entire index and ripple across global markets.
“Weaker or less durable investment and profitability in AI could trigger a correction in AI-related asset prices, exacerbated by rising leverage, concentrated exposures, and circular financing arrangements,” IMF’s assessment noted.
The IMF also raised serious concerns about how much debt is fueling the AI boom. Companies, hedge funds, and retail investors have all borrowed heavily to bet on AI growth. The fund’s analysis flagged $300 billion in transactions between major cloud providers and weaker AI companies. These transactions rely on $650 billion in existing debt and $1.4 trillion in future commitments. If AI revenue expectations weaken, this chain of borrowing could trigger forced selling and severe market volatility.
AI-powered trading systems add another layer of risk on top of this. The IMF warned that autonomous trading models could create synchronized herding behavior during market stress. When many AI systems react to the same signals simultaneously, they could rapidly worsen any downturn instead of stabilizing it.
The fund singled out Asian markets as the most exposed to an AI shock. Investors in the UK and euro area face lower direct risk but could still suffer through their US holdings. Meanwhile, the IMF noted that banks may end up with weak capital cushions if AI revenues disappoint.
On the cyber front, the IMF previously warned in May that AI-powered attacks could “dramatically reduce” the time and cost of exploiting financial system vulnerabilities. IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva has also said the global financial system is “not ready” for AI-driven cyber threats and called for stronger international cooperation.
