El Salvador has launched a Haiti rescue operation for four soldiers seized in a gang ambush, President Nayib Bukele announced on Wednesday 21 October 2026. The four are aviation technicians in a UN-authorised force fighting Haiti’s gangs, Diario El Salvador reported.
For US readers, the Haiti rescue matters because Washington has publicly promised to bring the four men home. It also tests the multinational force that the United States supports in a Caribbean country close to its shores.
Bukele Announces the Haiti Rescue
Bukele said a military operation was launched on Wednesday to make the four compatriots come home alive and unharmed. He described them as hostages and not as fighters, saying they are technicians whose main job is medical evacuation and saving lives.
In a message to Haitian gang leaders, he said the men were kidnapped while returning from buying food at a market. He warned that what comes next will be far worse than the current operation if the four are not freed alive.
Bukele told the gangs not to take his words as empty threats, and said gangs were wiped out in El Salvador. He closed by saying the decision is in their hands.
How the Ambush Unfolded
The Salvadoran armed forces said four aviation technicians of Task Force Liberty II were returning to camp on Sunday 18 October. Gangs hit the vehicle with gunfire and explosives, it caught fire, and the four men got out, according to the military statement.
Salvadoran helicopters flew in to help and pushed the attackers back, but the aircraft were also hit by gunfire. Attempts to reach the men by land and air were blocked by the intensity of the fighting, the armed forces said.
The attack took place in Santo, part of Croix-des-Bouquets, about 12 kilometres (7 miles) from Port-au-Prince, according to El Diario de Hoy. On Tuesday the Gang Suppression Force said the Haiti rescue search goes on, several gang members were killed, and four of its own were injured.
What the Gang Suppression Force Is
The Gang Suppression Force, or GSF, was created a year ago by the UN Security Council to fight armed gangs in Haiti. Its mandate was renewed for six months on 29 September, and it is led by Major General Edernebat Batsuuri of Mongolia.
About 1,000 soldiers from Mongolia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Sri Lanka and Chad serve under him, El Diario de Hoy reported. Guatemala sent a new group of about 50 troops on Sunday.
El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly voted on 29 September to extend the army’s GSF role by 12 months, according to El Mundo. The Salvadoran contingent is made up of aviation and technical staff who handle medical evacuations.

What Washington Has Said
Mike Waltz, the US ambassador to the United Nations, condemned the attack at a Security Council meeting on Monday 19 October. He said the United States and the GSF stand with the missing men and that Washington will bring them home.
Waltz said there is reason to believe all four survived, but that their whereabouts are unknown. He said gangs hit the armoured vehicle with hundreds of bullets and explosives.
The same day, the US embassy in Port-au-Prince told Americans to avoid the Santo area because of heavy clashes between gangs and security forces. Roads there may be blocked or impassable, the embassy said, according to El Diario de Hoy.
Who May Be Behind the Haiti Rescue Crisis
Authorities have not named the attackers, according to the Salvadoran daily elsalvador.com. The Spanish news agency EFE reported that local sources point to Viv Ansanm, Haiti’s main gang coalition, led by ex-police officer Jimmy Chérizier.
The US government offers up to US$5 million for information on Chérizier, known as Barbecue. Haiti’s Le Nouvelliste reported that the gang Chen Mechan captured the men after they strayed into its zone, as relayed by El Mundo.
What It Means for US Readers
The Haiti rescue shows that the force Washington backs in Haiti is taking real losses. Bukele is a close Central American ally of the Trump administration, as our guide to El Salvador’s regional role explains.
Americans in or near Haiti should follow the embassy’s travel alert and avoid the Port-au-Prince outskirts. Gang violence there has already killed or injured about 5,700 people this year, according to the United Nations, as the Rio Times reported.
A hostage crisis could shape how Washington backs Haiti’s police and army, as covered in our report on US support for Haiti. Haiti lies close to US shores, so lasting gang control there feeds migration and security concerns.
What Is Not Known
Neither the Salvadoran government nor the GSF has said where the four men are, or whether any is wounded. The Haitian government, led by Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, had not commented publicly on the attack when El Diario de Hoy reported on Monday.
It is also unclear how large the Haiti rescue operation is, or whether it involves ground troops. No gang has publicly claimed the ambush or made any demand, according to the reports reviewed.
What Comes Next
The GSF and Salvadoran forces are expected to keep operating around Santo while the Haiti rescue search continues. Bukele has said more will follow if the four men are not released alive.
Haiti’s presidential and legislative elections were set for 13 December, but the electoral council has postponed the campaign and promised a new calendar. The United Nations has asked for a realistic timetable, according to El Diario de Hoy.
