What We Know
Americans who travel to Dakar or trade in jewellery and gold will want to understand this case, because it concerns the security of a working shop in the Rufisque area. Readers planning a trip should check current official travel advice, including guidance from the US State Department.
The victim was Mouhamadou Khabane Guèye, a jeweller who is also named Modou Khabane Gueye or Mouhamed Khabane Guèye in local reports. Seneweb describes him as 55 years old and originally from Mbacké.
Dakarposte says he left a wife and three children, two daughters and a son. We relay that detail as reported by Dakarposte, and we extend our condolences to his family.
His body was found in his jewellery shop in Zac Mbao on Saturday 17 October 2026. Seneweb says police were alerted at about 9:28 pm, and that he lay behind the counter.
Seneweb reports that police found a deep wound on the left side of the head. It also lists bruises on the left forearm and the right thigh, which Seneweb links to a violent struggle.
The same report mentions blood traces on the walls and says the electrical breaker had been cut. Surveillance cameras had been removed, but police recovered the central recording unit.
Officers from the Rufisque Central Police Station and the technical and scientific police attended the scene. Seneweb names Cheikh Diakhoumpa as the prosecutor of the Rufisque court.
Local outlets differ on the cause of death and on what was taken. Dakarposte reports that armed robbers took a large quantity of gold and cash, and SENTV says they took the shop’s entire gold stock.
SENTV adds that the assailants allegedly slit the victim’s throat, a detail the other two outlets do not carry. Seneweb, by contrast, says the safe showed signs of attempted forced entry but stayed closed.
Dakarposte says the cause of death awaits a forensic examination. Neither Dakarposte nor SENTV quotes a police or prosecutor statement in the articles we reviewed.
What Is Not Known
The cause of death has not been confirmed, and no forensic result has been reported. It is also unclear whether the account of an armed robbery or the account of a closed safe is accurate.
The quantity of gold and cash said to be missing has not been confirmed by police or the prosecutor. The reports we reviewed do not mention an official inventory of the shop.
No arrests were reported as of the evening of 18 October 2026. The motive, the number of people involved and the identity of anyone responsible are all unknown.
What It Means for Travelers and US Readers
For travellers, this is a single criminal investigation, and the reports do not describe any wider threat to visitors. Official travel advice remains the best guide to current conditions in the Dakar region.
Businesses in the jewellery and gold trade will note the reported details, including the cut electrical breaker and the removed cameras. Those details come from one outlet, and none of the reports quotes a police conclusion.
