Money Transfers to Georgia Down 10.1% in September Amid Drop in Russia Transactions

Money transfers to Georgia from abroad fell by 10.1% year-on-year to USD 285.7 million in September 2026, marking the biggest annual decline recorded so far this year, according to the latest data published by the National Bank of Georgia (NBG). Transfers from Russia saw the sharpest annual drop, while the European Union and the United States remained the largest sources of transfers, together accounting for 72.3% of total inflows, or USD 206.7 million.

Transfers from EU member countries alone amounted to USD 143.37 million, down 0.63% year-on-year and accounting for 50.1% of total inflows.

The United States was the largest individual source of transfers, sending USD 63.39 million, or 22.1% of the total. Italy followed with USD 53.97 million (18.8%), Germany with USD 30.64 million (10.7%), Greece with USD 27.57 million (9.6%), and Israel with USD 26.3 million (9.2%).

Transfers from Turkey totaled USD 11.34 million, accounting for 3.9% of the total, while those from Russia fell to USD 7.86 million, or 2.7% of all inflows. Although Russian transfers increased from USD 5.07 million in August, they fell 80.1% year-on-year, marking the steepest annual decline among the countries listed in the NBG data.

Russian transfers amounted to USD 42.02 million in July and USD 51.42 million in June. The sharp decline follows the suspension of transfers to Georgia through Russia’s Zolotaya Korona money transfer system in July, which followed the EU’s latest sanctions package against Moscow.

Among the reporting countries, the largest year-on-year increase was recorded in transfers from Lebanon at USD 1.22 million, an 80.5% increase. Transfers from Saudi Arabia increased 31.7% to USD 1.93 million, while those from Jordan rose 21.5% to USD 1.13 million.

Transfers from Kyrgyzstan recorded the second-largest decline after Russia, falling by 72% year-on-year to USD 2.41 million. Inflows from Kazakhstan dropped by 33.9% to USD 5.01 million, while those from Poland fell by 33.2% to USD 2.01 million. Transfers from Azerbaijan and Ireland also declined by 15.7% to USD 2.86 million and 14.3% to USD 5.28 million, respectively.

Meanwhile, transfers from Georgia to other countries totaled USD 36.9 million in September, down 3.5% from USD 38.2 million in the same month last year.

Personal remittances to Georgia accounted for 11.2% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), according to the World Bank’s 2025 data.
