Gopax, a South Korean cryptocurrency exchange that drew criticism for offering little explanation after its hacking became known, unlike other financial firms, has belatedly issued an apology.
The exchange posted a notice on its website late in the afternoon on the 16th disclosing the personal data breach and the extent of the damage, according to financial industry sources on the 18th. The notice came two days after the Financial Services Commission announced the matter on the 14th. "We are informing you of the personal data breach and offer our deep apologies," Gopax said.
The incident involved nine people in total — seven customers and two current or former employees — whose nicknames and login histories were found to have been accessed from outside, according to the findings. No cases of unauthorized withdrawals of customers' Korean won or cryptocurrency, or of asset losses, have been identified so far. (See related article, page 9, Oct. 16)
