Grenada Athletic Association (GAA) President Johnell Mitchell and National Technical Official Shakira Collymore have travelled to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, to participate in the NACAC Technical Managers Certification Course from 13–16 October, 2026.
The programme forms part of the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association’s (NACAC) ongoing efforts to strengthen the education, professional development and certification of technical officials throughout the region.
The certification course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills required to serve as Technical Managers at athletics competitions, while ensuring the effective application of World Athletics Competition and Technical Rules and Regulations.
For Collymore, the opportunity represents an important step in her professional development as a sports official. “At this stage of my career, this opportunity means growth, expanding my knowledge and strengthening my skills so I can continue contributing to the development of athletics and, by extension, sports in Grenada. I also hope to inspire more women to take on leadership roles in sport,” she said.
A fixture within Grenada’s athletics community since 2015, Collymore has built an impressive portfolio of service across multiple sporting disciplines. Since 2025, she has served as Technical Manager for the GUT-Nexa National Primary School Athletics Championships and is expected to return to the role in 2027. In April of 2026, Collymore was awarded the Esther Maynard Award for Most Outstanding Grenadian Technical Official at the 53rd CARIFTA Games.
Beyond athletics, she is a certified national indoor and beach volleyball referee and serves as Head Coach of the Paradise FC International Women’s Team, among several other sporting responsibilities.
Collymore will be joined by Mitchell, the recently elected President of the Grenada Athletic Association, as the 2 officials participate in the 4-day training programme alongside representatives from across the NACAC region.
Their participation reflects Grenada’s continued commitment to strengthening technical expertise within athletics and ensuring local officials remain aligned with international standards and best practices.
The GAA President expects that the knowledge gained from the certification course will help enhance the management and delivery of athletics events in Grenada while supporting the overall development of the sport at the national level.
