Arch Manning faces more pressure to keep Texas starting job as backup gets more first-team reps

For the Texas Longhorns, the start of the 2026 college football campaign felt like an absolute dream, opening with four consecutive victories highlighted by an epic second-half comeback against Ohio State and a commanding performance against Tennessee.

However, momentum in the SEC moves fast, and following their scheduled bye week, Texas finds itself mired in a painful two-game losing streak after dropping a 27-24 decision to unranked Florida at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

That shocking home setback snapped a legendary 22-game home winning streak against unranked opponents, causing the Longhorns to plummet 12 spots down to No. 19 in the latest AP Top 25 poll.

The sudden slump arrives at the worst possible time, as Texas faces a grueling upcoming schedule featuring back-to-back home clashes against No. 7 Ole Miss and Mississippi State, followed by daunting road trips to face No. 22 Missouri and No. 19 LSU.

Arch Manning Faces Scrutiny as Backup KJ Lacey Earns More First-Team Practice Reps

For the Longhorns, a third loss would virtually erase any chance of securing a berth in the 12-team College Football Playoff, forcing Arch Manning and company to play near-flawless football over their final six games if they hope to contend for a national title, a crown Texas has not captured since 2005.

When a preseason title contender stumbles, every position comes under intense evaluation. While Manning remains the projected starting quarterback, head coach Steve Sarkisian has allocated an increased share of first-team practice reps to redshirt freshman quarterback KJ Lacey, according to reports from ESPN's Pete Thamel.

During his Monday press conference, Sarkisian clarified that while Lacey regularly receives a baseline portion of snaps each week, the staff will continue to evaluate the rotation as practice progresses, noting that "everything means everything" when assessing the team's offensive execution.

Manning’s recent performances have fallen far short of his electric season-opening stretch, hindered by three costly turnovers in back-to-back losses.

Through six games, the high-profile signal-caller has thrown for 1,295 yards, 11 touchdowns, and five interceptions, already approaching his mark from last season, where he surrendered just seven interceptions across 13 total contests.

While Manning retains the strong support of his head coach and locker room, the margin for error in Austin has vanished. With a top-10 matchup against Ole Miss looming, it is time for Manning to execute flawlessly and demonstrate why the immense national expectations surrounding him extend far beyond his famous last name.
