Singer and TV personality Nandi Madida has sparked a wave of conversation on X after reacting to Rwanda's announcement that it will host the Formula 1 African Grand Prix. Her posts celebrating Rwanda's governance model quickly struck a chord with South Africans reflecting on their own country's direction.
The Rwanda Broadcasting Agency shared that Sports Minister Nelly Mukazayire confirmed preparations for the F1 African Grand Prix would focus on three key areas: competition, entertainment and business. Nandi responded by pointing to what consistently impresses visitors to the East African nation. She said:
"One thing you consistently hear from people who visit Rwanda is how clean, organised and well-run the country is. Rwanda is also known for its strict laws and enforcement. It's interesting to see how discipline, urban planning and governance can contribute to a country's development.”
Nandi's Vision for a Better South Africa
The Idols SA judge did not stop at praising Rwanda. She used the moment to articulate what she believes South Africa needs to reach its potential. Nandi Madida wrote:
"I dream of a South Africa transformed by visionary leadership, discipline, accountability, strict law enforcement and exceptional governance. Rwanda and Singapore remind us that nations can turn their fortunes around. With political will and vision, greatness is possible for any country."
Peeps weigh in on Rwanda vs South Africa
Her words resonated widely, drawing responses from entrepreneurs, commentators and everyday South Africans.
Tebogo Ditshego, who visited Rwanda on a government invitation to mentor young entrepreneurs, backed Nandi's sentiments directly. He said:
"I can confirm it is clean, safe and very well organised. The people are friendly, and the environment is great for business.”
@RealXavier011:
"True… But their PR is very good. South Africa wanted to go that direction 4 years ago, and the public decided it's foolish 'blah blah unemployment ', and here we are."
@ValenteezyM:
"Ene they don't play about their borders hey."
@yenzo_kuhl:
"Rwanda didn't eat money from wrong people, and they are not trying to please other countries at the expense of their people."
@Thembaleth28799:
"The age and qualifications the minister has. You can tell they are serious about the development of their country. Unlike somewhere else in Africa."
@CollectiveWire:
"100%, they even shut down g*mbling in 2024 to reset and re energize the industry and only after some real work was done, it has been re opened."
@The_Villager_In:
"And to think South Africa is literally 5 to 10 decisions away from being in top top condition."
@elnamgnd:
"Having clean, organised and strict law enforcement benefits everyone and makes a country better. There is nothing good about a lawless country."
@Malatjie_:
"They have had 1 President since 2000. Rwanda is one huge village with good PR centred around Kigali."
Robert Marawa's old tweet about Rwanda resurfaces
South African sports broadcaster Robert Marawa said his attendance at the FIA Awards in Kigali in December 2024 gave him an early indication of Rwanda's F1 ambitions.
Formula 1 confirmed on 13 October 2026 that Rwanda secured a 10-year agreement to bring the sport back to Africa in the early 2030s.
