Bitcoin keeps knocking on the door at $87,000. The door keeps not opening.
After repeated rejections near that level, a key on-chain valuation gauge has slipped below its 30th percentile. Crypto analyst Darkfost reported on October 18, 2026 that Bitcoin’s cycle-adjusted MVRV percentile had fallen to 25.7%, a reading tied to what has historically been accumulation territory.
What the MVRV reading actually says
For Bitcoin, MVRV compares market value, the current price applied to all coins, against realized value, which prices each coin at the moment it last moved on-chain. When the gap is wide, holders are sitting on fat paper gains. When it narrows, the market is closer to its collective cost basis.
Darkfost’s version adds a twist. Rather than relying on the raw MVRV ratio, the analysis uses a percentile adjusted for current market conditions across cycles, asking how today’s valuation ranks against Bitcoin’s own history.
At 25.7%, Bitcoin is back in a band it has occupied only about 25% of the time. Historically, that region has been associated with accumulation rather than euphoria.
There is a nuance worth noting. The current reading sits in accumulation territory, but it has not entered the extreme undervaluation band that has historically lined up with major market lows.
The $87,000 problem
Bitcoin faced at least three price rejections near or above $87,000 between late September and early October 2026.
When Darkfost’s observation landed, Bitcoin’s spot price was sitting between $81,700 and $81,900. That marks a clear pullback from the $87,000 resistance level that buyers have repeatedly failed to clear.
The research describes the recent selling as appearing capitulation-style, and the analysis suggests it may set up a transitional accumulation phase.
Lookonchain, KuCoin, Odaily and Cointelegraph all picked up Darkfost’s findings on the same day.
Long-term holders and ETFs: the supply side
The research indicates that long-term Bitcoin holders are currently distributing more coins than they are acquiring.
US spot Bitcoin ETFs have been one candidate to absorb that supply. Net inflows to those products were mildly positive in September 2026. Flows have since flattened or tipped into slight outflows in October.
Why cycle-adjusted metrics are getting attention
Raw on-chain metrics have a known weakness. As Bitcoin matures and its market structure changes, thresholds that worked in earlier cycles can drift out of usefulness. A cycle-adjusted percentile tries to correct for that by ranking current conditions against a moving historical backdrop.
What this means for traders and investors
The research frames a potential strategic entry as dependent on the market holding around the $81,700 range and showing signs of a bullish reversal.
Long-term holders are net distributing, and ETF demand has cooled from September’s modest gains. If outflows begin to outpace inflows in a meaningful way, the accumulation thesis loses one of its supporting legs.
The current reading has exited the extreme undervaluation band most closely tied to historical market lows, leaving room for the metric to fall further before conditions match past cycle floors.
