Key Facts
- Asian stocks rebounded early Wednesday, with South Korea’s Kospi up about 4% and Japan’s Nikkei up about 1%, after Wall Street closed mixed on Tuesday.
- Brent crude settled at US$108.79 a barrel on Tuesday, while US crude (WTI) fell 1.8% to US$101.79, keeping oil exporters such as Brazil’s Petrobras and Colombia’s oil-linked shares in focus.
- The dollar index slipped 0.2% to 101.77, a modest help for the Brazilian real, Chilean peso and Colombian peso, while the US ten-year Treasury yield stands at 5.115%.
- Tuesday’s Latin American session was uneven: Brazil’s index rose 1.57% and Mexico’s 0.36%, while Chile’s IPSA fell 0.42%.
- Mexico reports retail sales for August today, and its mid-month inflation reading follows on Thursday.
- Prediction markets Polymarket traders put “no change” at the Federal Reserve’s 28 October meeting at 86.5%, as of 11:13 p.m. ET on Tuesday, 20 October.
Today’s Focus
The region gets a calmer hand-off from Asia this morning, because the dollar has softened and Asian stocks have recovered. That matters for Latin America’s open because a weaker dollar helps importers and keeps the Brazilian real and Chilean peso steady.
Tuesday was not a uniform session. Brazil’s Ibovespa, its main stock index, gained 1.57%, Mexico’s IPC added 0.36% and Chile’s IPSA slipped 0.42%.
Today’s calendar is lighter than it looks. Mexico publishes retail sales, Colombia reports trade numbers, Argentina reports economic activity and the United States reports weekly oil inventories.
For US investors, the question is whether the softer dollar holds into the Federal Reserve’s 28 October meeting. Polymarket traders see no change as the most likely outcome, at 86.5%.

01 The overnight tape in one read
Asia recovered early on Wednesday, with South Korea’s Kospi up about 4% and Japan’s Nikkei up about 1% in early trading. The Hang Seng in Hong Kong was little changed.
On Wall Street, the Dow Jones rose 1.02% to 52,496 and the S&P 500 added 0.28% to 7,713. The Nasdaq was flat, down 0.02% at 26,425.
Oil is the more directly relevant story for Latin America. Brent settled at US$108.79 a barrel on Tuesday, down 0.7%, while US crude fell 1.8% to US$101.79.
Gold slipped 0.44% to US$4,114 an ounce and the US ten-year Treasury yield eased 2.4 basis points to 5.115%. The VIX, Wall Street’s fear gauge, fell 6.13% to 17.31.
Assessment — Calmer open, but conviction is thin MEDIUM
The evidence for a steadier open is that the dollar is lower, volatility has eased and Asian stocks have recovered. Yet US yields remain above 5% and oil is still near US$109, so this looks like a pause rather than a clean turn. The variable to watch is the Federal Reserve’s 28 October meeting, where Polymarket traders price no change at 86.5%.
02 The board before the open
| Instrument | Level | Change | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| VIX | 17.31 | −6.13% | Fear eases, supporting risk |
| Dollar index (DXY) | 101.77 | −0.20% | Dollar softens, mild tailwind |
| US 10-year yield | 5.115% | −2.4 bp | Yields dip, but stay high |
| Brent | US$108.79 | −0.7% | Settlement on Tuesday |
| WTI | US$101.79 | −1.8% | Settlement on Tuesday |
| Gold | US$4,114 | −0.44% | Haven demand cools |
The VIX fell more than six per cent, the clearest overnight sign that traders are less nervous than they were on Monday. A falling VIX typically supports carry trades and the region’s higher-yielding currencies.
The dollar index is only slightly lower, but the direction matters. Latin America benefits from a stable or weaker dollar, which helps keep the real and peso steady.

03 What the data shows — turnover leaders hid a retail revival
| Stock | Move | Turnover | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| MGLU3 | +14.8% | R$810m | Magazine Luiza led B3 gainers by size |
| BHIA3 | +20.2% | R$35m | Smaller retailer, low turnover |
| AMER3 | +15.6% | R$53m | Americanas, another strong retail name |
| WIZC3 | −20.0% | R$70m | Steep drop on modest flow |
| MOVI3 | +12.5% | R$254m | Mid-cap interest picking up |
The most-traded B3 names tell a more cautious story than the headline index move. Petrobras preferred shares, Brazil’s state-controlled oil giant, saw turnover of roughly R$2.5 billion (about US$490 million), while SMAL11, an ETF tracking smaller Brazilian companies, moved almost R$1.8 billion (about US$350 million).
Retailers dominated the gainers list. Magazine Luiza rose almost 15% on R$810 million (about US$160 million) of turnover, and Americanas added more than 15% on much thinner flow.
WIZC3, an insurance broker, fell 20% on only R$70 million (about US$14 million) in traded value. Its drop is a reminder that single B3 moves can be company-specific rather than driven by the macro tape.
04 Brazil and the currencies
The real was little changed, with the dollar at R$5.0278, down 0.11%. A lower dollar and steadier oil give it a better chance of holding recent gains than on a risk-off day.
The wider currency picture was mixed. The Chilean peso strengthened 0.67% to 974.7 per dollar and the Colombian peso gained 0.50% to 3,159, while the Mexican peso was unchanged at 18.43 and Argentina’s peso barely moved at 1,525 per dollar.
Brazil’s Selic, the benchmark interest rate, stands at 13.75% after a 0.25-point cut on 16 September. The next Copom decision comes on 4 November.
Foreign flows into B3 remain the key read-through for the real. Watch today whether the retail bid survives the next batch of Latin American data.
05 The regional setup
| Index | Country | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Ibovespa | Brazil | +1.57% |
| S&P/BMV IPC | Mexico | +0.36% |
| COLCAP | Colombia | n/a |
| Merval | Argentina | n/a |
| IPSA | Chile | −0.42% |
Brazil led the region higher on Tuesday, followed by Mexico’s IPC, which closed at 69,259 for its fourth gain in a row. Chile’s IPSA slipped, and we could not confirm closing levels for Colombia’s COLCAP and Argentina’s Merval.
Chile’s IPSA fell 0.42% to 10,926. The split shows that local factors still outweigh the global tailwind in some markets.
Argentina’s Leading Indicator, the Di Tella University index, was due on Tuesday with a consensus of -0.3% after -0.27% in August. We could not confirm the September result at the time of writing.
For today, the setup is more balanced. A calmer global tape does not automatically lift every Latin American index, but it lowers the risk that the whole region opens defensively.
06 The technical picture
The Ibovespa closed at 208,296, only 0.4% below its record close of 209,067 on 9 October. That leaves the index exposed to quick profit-taking if the dollar firms again.
Mexico’s IPC, at 69,259, is 3.3% below its February high of 71,601. Chile’s IPSA is 6.0% below its January peak of 11,628, the widest gap among the big regional indices.
The S&P 500 sits 1.4% below its record close of 7,819 on 6 October, and the flat Nasdaq suggests tech leadership is still unsteady. Watch the dollar index and the VIX together: if both keep slipping, the path for Latin American equities stays open.
07 What Prediction Markets Say
Traders on Polymarket, a prediction market, put the chance that the Federal Reserve leaves interest rates unchanged at its 28 October meeting at 86.5 percent at 11:13 p.m. ET on Tuesday, 20 October. They gave 12.5 percent to a 0.25-point rate increase, and about US$51.4 million had been traded on that market.
The Fed’s target range is 3.75% to 4.00% after a 0.25-point increase in September. These prices are bets by traders, not forecasts by the central bank or polls.
Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.
08 What to watch
- Mexico retail sales for August: Due at 13:00 Lisbon time, with a consensus of 2% year on year after 1.8%; a reading below consensus would point to softer consumer demand.
- Mexico mid-month inflation on Thursday: Consensus is 3.6% year on year for the first half of October, against 3.42% previously.
- US crude inventories at 15:30 Lisbon time: Consensus is a draw of 0.3 million barrels after a draw of 8.557 million, and Cushing stocks rose 1.862 million barrels the week before; oil near US$109 drives Colombia, Mexico and Petrobras-linked shares.
- Colombia and Argentina data: Colombia reports August trade and imports at 16:00 Lisbon time, and Argentina reports August economic activity at 20:00.
