After nearly two decades on the sidelines in the Steel City, former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has transitioned smoothly into his broadcasting role on NBC’s “Sunday Night Football.” Yet, as he offers expert analysis to millions of viewers each week, Tomlin said he has no intention of hiding his deep-rooted loyalty to the Black and Gold.
Appearing on the “New Heights” podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce, Tomlin addressed whether he has faced any pushback or criticism for appearing biased toward his former team while on air. Rather than offering a canned PR response or promising strict neutrality, Tomlin leaned directly into his past.
"To be honest with you, I don't care if I do, man," Tomlin stated when asked about claims of favoring Pittsburgh. "Like, how could you be somewhere 19 years, man, and had a personal stake in most of those guys being there and not care for them, not root for them, not be for them."
For Steelers fans, Tomlin’s refusal to sanitize his affinity for the franchise is a refreshing reminder of the strong culture he built over 19 consecutive non-losing seasons. While some national broadcasters go to great lengths to project total objectivity, Tomlin views his long-standing personal relationships with players and staff as an asset rather than a conflict of interest.
While he remains committed to delivering sharp, professional analysis on broadcast nights, he refuses to put on a facade for the camera.
"I'm not going to pretend that I'm not," Tomlin added. "I just can't do that. Certainly, I got a job to do and I'm going to do it. But everybody knows where my heart is and where my support is and I'm not apologizing for that."
Ultimately, Tomlin’s authentic approach sets him apart in a crowded sports media landscape. By embracing his unbreakable ties to Pittsburgh rather than running from them, he brings a unique, transparent voice to the booth that resonates deeply with Steelers Nation and casual football fans alike.
