Terrell Owens last played an NFL game in 2010, yet watching Mike Evans has the Hall of Famer convinced he could still line up.
The former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver picked apart Evans, now a 49ers wideout himself, in an episode of his “Get TO The Point Podcast,” arguing the 33-year-old wins with route savvy and a quarterback’s help rather than speed.
Owens described what he noticed while the game played out.
“We were watching the game. Mike was playing, Mike Evans, and I was like, ‘Look at his routes.’ I’m like, ‘I can do that. It’s not like he’s blazing speed.’ He just knows how to run routes, knows where to go, and then the quarterback can save you,” Owens said. “Like, he was just catching some really average plays.”
Former Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley, doing his best broadcaster impression, piled on.
“‘Oh, he’s killing it!’ But he ran straight!”
Owens still gave Evans credit for the production.
“Yeah. But he was putting up numbers though… He was balling,” Owens responded.
His resume carries weight. Owens, a six-time Pro Bowler, spent his first eight seasons in San Francisco before moving on to the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals.
He finished with 1,078 catches for 15,934 yards and 153 touchdowns.
Evans hasn’t exactly been coasting, either. He has 27 catches for 420 yards and three scores this season.
No one in NFL history had opened a career with 11 consecutive 1,000-yard seasons before Evans did it, a streak Jerry Rice, another 49ers great, never matched.
San Francisco’s next game gives Evans another chance to add to those 420 yards. Owens’ comeback, for now, exists only on his podcast.
