How the France riots could affect South Africans in and heading to France

• Violent riots erupted across France on 17 October 2026, with over 550,000 protesters taking to the streets in cities including Paris, Marseille and Lyon
• DIRCO urged South Africans in France to register their presence via the Travel Smart app or by emailing rosahelp@dirco.gov.za as safety risks mounted
• South Africans online drew sharp comparisons between the French unrest and the country's own history of civil protests and looting

France plunged into widespread unrest on Saturday, 17 October 2026, as more than 550,000 people took to the streets over rising living costs, fuel prices, and a shortage of teachers in schools. While many demonstrations remained peaceful, violence broke out in several major cities, with looting, arson, and clashes with police reported across the country.

The death toll stands at two: a protester in Paris and a 22-year-old police officer in Nantes, who was struck by a vehicle. More than 2,000 people have been arrested, and hundreds of police officers have been injured. President Emmanuel Macron has condemned the violence but stopped short of declaring a national state of emergency, instead allowing local mayors to ban public gatherings at short notice.

Cities hit hard by the violence

Paris saw around 110,000 protesters gather, with the worst violence near Place de la République, Canal Saint-Martin, and Gare du Nord. In Marseille, the town hall was breached and shops were looted. Lyon's tourism office was set alight, while Limoges's 143-year-old town hall was destroyed in a fire. In Bordeaux, masked groups broke into the prefect's residence.

What South Africans in France should do

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has not issued a formal travel ban but is urging South Africans currently in France to register their whereabouts using the Travel Smart app or by emailing rosahelp@dirco.gov.za. Those needing emergency consular help can contact the South African Embassy in Paris at info.paris@dirco.gov.za.

Practical advice includes avoiding large crowds and known protest hotspots, keeping original passports secured at accommodation while carrying a physical copy, and staying in regular contact with family back home. South Africans planning to travel to France soon should review their travel insurance carefully, as many standard policies exclude cover for civil unrest. Checking flight schedules for disruptions before departure is also strongly advised.

The unrest began in northern Paris high schools over teacher shortages and poor infrastructure before spreading into broader anger over inequality. With French presidential elections approaching next year, tensions are expected to remain high.

Back home, the scenes resonated with many South Africans who recalled the July 2021 unrest, and online conversations quickly drew parallels around poverty, public service failures, and immigration tensions in both countries.

"Did we learn our riots/protesting from them, or did they learn from us is the question?"

@Sharon Bri quipped:

"Since when are South Africans scared of a riot!"

@Carol Scott observed:

"Seems to be a worldwide phenomenon."

@Francois Fouche joked:

"That's normal for a South African."
