Urban Meyer calls out ‘perplexing’ Ohio State’s Ryan Day QB decision appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Ohio State football team is going to play multiple games without their starting quarterback, Julian Sayin, who suffered an injury during their win against Indiana. Backup quarterback Luke Fahey is in line to lead the offense of Ryan Day’s team, but former football head coach Urban Meyer believes five-star quarterback Tavien St. Clair should receive an opportunity to showcase his abilities.
On The Triple Option, Meyer expressed his confusion over St. Clair’s limited role and shared why Ohio State must prioritize preparing its backup quarterbacks during the bye week.
“It’s perplexing why he’s not the quarterback, and you know why he doesn’t jog on the field,” Meyer said. “Let’s say he went down. We went through this, obviously, so I came to the Cardinal Jones. You know everyone else is kind of tired. Everyone else is kind of, but you have to practice your ass off.”

“And I would talk to the team we did and apologize to the players. Normally, it’s the time to rest, guys. And you’ll rest some. In my understanding, Ohio State’s got a very unselfish team. They’re going to go practice as much this week and get their backup quarterback ready because you’ve got a real one coming up. I’m curious to see if they try the five-star.”
Sayin suffered the injury late in the fourth quarter against Indiana. Before leaving the game, he completed 15 of 29 pass attempts for 235 yards and two touchdowns, though he also threw two interceptions. Then Fahey stepped in for Sayin against Indiana.
The timing of Sayin’s injury makes Ohio State’s quarterback decision particularly significant, as the team has a bye week to prepare before facing USC.
The Buckeyes entered the bye week with a 6-1 record following their win over Indiana. However, maintaining that momentum without Sayin will require adjustments from the coaching staff.
Day must now decide whether to continue trusting the established backup in Fahey or allow the five-star St. Clair to take control of Ohio State’s offense.
