Marquette men’s soccer beat Butler 4-0 last time out, and so we’re back here to preview their next match. The Golden Eagles are now 2-14-2 in their last 17 Big East games, so we are a long way from really turning a corner under the direction of third year head coach David Korn, but one step at a time.
Speaking of steps, since Marquette is now 1-3-0 in the Big East, we’re at the halfway point of their eight match conference schedule. This is a great spot to asses exactly where the Golden Eagles are relative to the four team Big East tournament field. As it stands right now, Marquette is still very firmly in contention for one of the four spots.
However, the spot in question is going to be the second of the two wild card spots. Since Marquette has already lost to both Xavier and Creighton in Midwest Division play and those two teams are currently tied for first place with eight points, it seems unlikely that MU is going to be able to close that five point gap with four matches to go. If they hadn’t played the Musketeers or the Bluejays yet, that could open the door a bit, but that’s out of MU’s hands now. XU and CU are both in the driver’s seat for either winning the Midwest Division to get that spot in the Big East tourney or taking the top wild card spots since no one other than division leader Georgetown (12 points) has more than five points over in the East Division.
Figuring out to get from three points to in front of two teams — Akron and Seton Hall — with five points is relatively easy with four matches left to go. Even better: Marquette closes the regular season with Akron, so if things get tight down the stretch, the Golden Eagles have a potential Win And You’re In game looming.
Marquette’s other three games are against teams with either three or four points right now, so that’s helpful. Unfortunately, all three of them have all only played three matches right now while Marquette is sitting on four played and in the books. That’s going to make those head-to-head matchups critical for the Golden Eagles, as they can not afford those three teams to earn points at Marquette’s expense relative to that fourth and final conference tournament berth.
That’s where we’re at with four matches and 12 potential points left for Marquette men’s soccer in 2026. Hey, it’s real cool you won a match and won it relatively easily. Now do it again.
Big East Match #5: vs Connecticut Huskies (5-6-2, 1-2-0 Big East)

Marquette is 1-9-2 all time against UConn. The only MU win in series history, which dates back to 1991, came in 2012, when both teams were ranked in the top 10 at the time. I know, wild, right?? Marquette’s lone win in the series is arguably the biggest regular season victory in program history! That was also the last time the two faced off until the Huskies rejoined the Big East, so the Golden Eagles are just 0-2-1 since, including a 3-2 loss in Storrs as the most recent meeting thanks to divisional play.
UConn comes into this match under .500 on the season because they’ve dropped each of their last two games. The most recent one was a Big East home game against DePaul where the shots ended up mostly even, but the Huskies were down 1-0 22 minutes in and down 2-0 just before the one hour mark. They recorded a 1-0 victory against Villanova for their most recent W, scoring in the 36th minute and outshooting the Wildcats in a barn burner, 24-14. UConn put 11 shots on frame in that match, so it’s probably a bit unlucky that they ended up with just one goal.
The other Big East game on the board for the Huskies is a 2-1 home loss to Seton Hall. They gave up two goals less than 80 seconds apart before the match was even 15 minutes old, and only a penalty kick in the 62nd minute stopped them from getting shutout.
While the Huskies have not been stacking up wins left, right, and center, that doesn’t mean they’re not scoring goals. The Huskies have 23 on the year, and that means they’re averaging 1.77 per match. Now, with that said, they have three goals in three matches against Big East competition, so things have slowed down, and in addition to that, they put up six on something called Fisher College to help through the average out of whack. Elijah Langford is leading the UConn offense with seven goals this season, and he didn’t even play in the game against Fisher. With that said, he doesn’t have have a goal against a Big East team yet and none in any of UConn’s last three contests. In fact, DePaul held Langford without a shot in just 38 minutes of action.
Marquette’s defenders are going to have to keep their head on a swivel out there. UConn has 21 assists on their 23 goals this season, which is a pretty good rate. Three different Huskies have at least three assists on their year, although one of the three —freshman Justin Hubbard — had two against Fisher College and then nothing until getting the helper on UConn’s lone goal against DePaul.
Kyle Durham is the one doing the goalkeeping for UConn this season, playing every minute except for that Fisher College game. He was the Big East Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year this fall, and justifiably based on how he played last year. We can’t say that he’s been holding up to that standard this season, as Durham is stopping just 69% of shots on goal this season. That’s why he’s allowing 1.42 goals per 90 minutes of action this season. It’s particularly troubling because UConn is outshooting their opponents by about five attempts per game on the year, so the other 10 guys on the field are doing their part to lighten Durham’s workload.
