Heavy rainfall in Kodaikanal region on Friday triggered landslips in at least three locations along the main Ghat Road, disrupting traffic. The Highways Department personnel were engaged in clearing the debris.
Heavy rainfall in the region was recorded for over two hours on Friday afternoon. As a result, rainwater surged across the main Batlagundu-Kodaikanal Ghat road like a flash flood. Traffic on the route was restored after about an hour, during which time the area witnessed significant commotion.
Landslips occurred at around three spots including areas near Srinivasapuram and Shenbaganur junction leaving soil, rocks, and vegetation scattered across the road and bringing traffic to a standstill.
On receiving the information, Highways Department personnel conducted an inspection and began working to remove the debris. The intense flow of water near Silver Cascade falls caused soil erosion, resulting in formation of large and deep potholes on the road. Adukkam-Kodaikanal Ghat road was cut-off and the traffic was closed. Heavy rainfall was also recorded in Palani. Waterlogging was reported in several residential areas.
Due to the intensification of the Northeast monsoon, Dindigul Superintendent of Police S. Jeyakumar has requested the public to avoid visiting Kodaikanal and Thandikudi.
