BUTTERWORTH: A police lance corporal was charged at the Sessions Court here today with robbing a Myanmar woman of her gold necklace last week.
Muhammad Fitri Suwaidi, 26, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read out to him before judge Roslan Hamid.
He was charged with robbing the woman of her gold necklace and intentionally putting her in fear at a house in Jalan Pekan Darat, Permatang Tok Jaya, about 4pm on Oct 16.
The charge was framed under Section 392 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of up to 14 years and liability to a fine or whipping upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Nadhirah Abdul Rahim prosecuted, while Fitri was unrepresented.
Nadhirah did not offer bail.
"However, if the court decides to grant bail, we request that additional conditions be imposed.
"First, the accused must surrender his passport to the court, and second, he must not disturb the witness until the end of the case," she said.
Fitri asked the court to grant him bail, saying he had to care for his family.
"I have two young children. My mother is not working, while my father works in a factory. My wife works at a fast-food restaurant.
"As such, I appeal to the court for bail," he said.
Roslan then set bail at RM5,000 with one surety and ordered Fitri to surrender his passport to the court and refrain from disturbing the witness.
He also fixed Nov 23 for mention pending the submission of documents and the appointment of a lawyer.
It is understood that Fitri, who is attached to the Kedah police contingent headquarters, was under suspension at the time of the alleged offence.
