Kathmandu, October 25
Work is underway to reopen the Benighat-Arughat-Larke road in Gorkha, which was blocked by flooding in the Budhigandaki River on October 11.
The Gorkha Road Project has cleared the road at Khorlabensi and is now working to remove mud and debris from the Tatopani section.
Around 250 metres of road at Khorlabensi was washed away by the flood, said Sujan Rana, an engineer at the project.
“We diverted the river and built a temporary bypass along the edge of the area,” Rana said, adding that vehicles can now pass through the section.
At Tatopani, workers are clearing mud and debris deposited over approximately 300 metres of road.
“Work is underway to remove the debris. Once that is cleared, vehicles will be able to reach Dobhan,” Rana said. He expected the road to Dobhan to reopen by Sunday evening.
Meanwhile, the Nepal Army is working to clear the blocked road from the Pangsिंग side. The army team has reached Salleri while clearing the route, Rana said.
“We have been clearing the road from below, while the army is working from above. The road up to Pangsिंग should reopen within a few days,” he said.
The October 11 floods damaged several sections of the Benighat-Arughat-Larke road. Landslides and mud deposits blocked parts of the route, while the floodwaters washed away the road in some locations. Dharche Rural Municipality is also coordinating efforts to reopen the road.
The route, which connects northern Gorkha towards Tibet via Benighat, Arughat and Larke, is a vital lifeline for communities in the district’s northern areas.
Its closure has disrupted not only local travel but also the transportation of food and other essential supplies. With trekking trails blocked in some places as well, residents in affected areas have been forced to rely on helicopters for access and supplies.
