A Honduras shooting killed two men and a woman at a family home in La Labor, in western Ocotepeque department, on Tuesday, 13 October. Ocotepeque borders Guatemala and El Salvador, and the US State Department urges Americans to reconsider travel to Honduras because of crime.
Residents say the three were shot after they tried to stop a man who lived with them from taking a young woman by force. National Police officers and military police went to the scene, and no arrest had been reported by Wednesday morning.
What Happened in La Labor
The Honduras shooting took place on Tuesday, 13 October, in La Labor, a small rural municipality in Ocotepeque department. Proceso Digital and Diario Tiempo place it at a house in Las Vegas, a mountain village well away from the town centre.
Two of the victims lay on the porch of the house and the third elsewhere on the property, La Prensa and Proceso Digital reported. El Heraldo, Proceso Digital and the television channel HCH all say the three were shot dead.
Officers of the National Police and the Military Police of Public Order went to the scene, Diario Tiempo and Proceso Digital reported. The military police is an armed forces unit deployed for public security, and La Prensa says soldiers guarded the area as the investigation began.
What Local Reports Say About the Suspect
Residents’ first accounts point to a man known as “El Abuelo”, or “the Grandfather”, as the main suspect. La Prensa says he lived in the same house, while HCH reports that the family had given him shelter and food.
According to these preliminary versions, he tried to take a young woman from the house by force. Members of the household reportedly tried to stop him and were shot, La Prensa, HCH and Diario Tiempo report.
Diario Tiempo reported on Tuesday night that police had found the young woman, whom it calls a minor, safe in another La Labor community. No other outlet and no police statement had confirmed the rescue by Wednesday morning.
Why Ocotepeque Matters Beyond Honduras
Ocotepeque is the westernmost department of Honduras and shares borders with Guatemala and El Salvador. The area where the three countries meet is known across Central America as the Trifinio.
Its border position puts the department on overland routes between the three countries. The US travel advisory for Honduras does not single out Ocotepeque, but it rates the whole country at Level 3, “Reconsider Travel”.
What It Means for You
For American travellers, the Honduras shooting recalls a State Department warning about the country. It says “violent crime, such as homicide, armed robbery, and kidnapping, remains common” in Honduras, and that violent gang activity is widespread.
Only one department, Gracias a Dios in the far east of the country, carries the top warning of Level 4, “Do Not Travel”. Visitors heading to western Honduras should check the advisory and local news before any overland trip.
The Honduras shooting adds to the killings that the National Police record on SEPOL, its public crime statistics website. For the wider trend, see how the September homicide count was reported.
What Is Not Known
Police have not released the names, ages or exact relationships of the three people killed, and local reports differ on how they were related. The reported rescue of the young woman also still awaits official confirmation.
No arrest had been reported by Wednesday morning, and the suspect’s whereabouts were unknown. Every account of the motive behind the Honduras shooting so far comes from residents, not from the police or prosecutors.
