Overview:
AMD is combining Instinct GPUs, EPYC CPUs, networking, and ROCm software to deliver integrated AI computing systems.
Collaborations with companies such as Meta and projects like Scaleway’s planned AI supercomputer in Sweden are expanding AMD’s presence in AI infrastructure.
AMD’s progress will depend on software compatibility, real-world performance, energy efficiency, and its ability to scale deployments reliably.
AI is changing the semiconductor industry, and the competition is no longer limited to building faster chips. Companies need complete systems that can train AI models, run them efficiently, and support millions of users. Under CEO Lisa Su, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is expanding its AI business beyond processors to challenge NVIDIA across the computing infrastructure behind modern AI.
The strategy combines accelerators, server processors, networking, large-scale computing systems, and software. AMD's challenge is to make these components work together reliably while giving customers a credible alternative to NVIDIA's established ecosystem.
Instinct GPUs Are at the Center of AMD's AI Strategy
AMD's Instinct graphics processing units (GPUs) are designed to handle demanding workloads, including training large AI models and running them after deployment. Its MI350 series is a key part of this effort, offering high-bandwidth memory and computing capabilities for data centers.
The next step is the MI400 series, which AMD is developing for larger AI deployments. These accelerators are intended to support demanding workloads where memory capacity, processing performance, and GPU-to-GPU communication can determine a system's efficiency.
For customers, the appeal is not simply raw performance. They also need enough memory to run large models, predictable operating costs, and systems that can scale as demand grows. AMD wants its hardware to compete on this broader combination of capabilities.

Helios Connects Chips Into Complete AI Systems
Individual accelerators are only part of the equation. Large AI workloads often require dozens of GPUs working together, which makes networking, memory access, power consumption, and cooling critical.
AMD's Helios rack-scale design brings together Instinct GPUs, EPYC server CPUs, Pensando networking technology, and ROCm software. The goal is to offer an integrated system rather than leave customers to assemble and optimize every component themselves.
This approach matters because data center operators increasingly need infrastructure that can support large-scale AI training and inference without creating bottlenecks between processors. AMD is positioning Helios as a way to simplify that process and compete for deployments that might otherwise use NVIDIA-based systems.
ROCm Software Is Crucial to Challenging NVIDIA
Hardware alone will not close the gap with NVIDIA. Developers also need software tools, libraries, and frameworks that allow AI applications to run efficiently without extensive rewriting.
AMD's ROCm software platform provides tools and libraries for developing GPU-accelerated applications. It supports widely used AI frameworks and inference technologies, including PyTorch, vLLM, and SGLang.
This matters because NVIDIA benefits from CUDA, its mature software ecosystem that many developers already use. Switching hardware can involve testing models, adapting code, and retraining engineering teams.
AMD is trying to reduce that friction through broader framework support and easier deployment. Its long-term success will depend on how consistently ROCm performs in real workloads and how quickly developers can move applications into production.
Partnerships are Bringing AMD Into Large AI Deployments
Large technology companies provide an important test of whether AMD's strategy works beyond product demonstrations. Meta, for example, is working with AMD across GPUs, EPYC processors, networking, and rack-scale systems, with deployments planned across multiple generations of hardware.
European cloud provider Scaleway has also announced plans for an AI supercomputer in Sweden powered by AMD Instinct MI355X accelerators. The system is intended to give startups and businesses across Europe access to AI computing capacity.
These projects can help AMD demonstrate that its hardware and software are suitable for demanding commercial workloads. They also give customers another option as demand for AI computing grows.
Energy Efficiency and Cost Could Shape the Competition
Running AI at scale requires substantial electricity, cooling infrastructure, and expensive hardware. As companies deploy more models, the cost of generating each response becomes increasingly important.
AMD is addressing this problem by improving accelerator performance, memory bandwidth, and system design. But theoretical specifications do not tell the whole story. Actual efficiency depends on the model, software optimization, utilization rates, and the workload being processed.
Customers will compare the cost of running AI applications over time, not just the purchase price of a chip. AMD must demonstrate that its complete systems can deliver competitive performance without adding operational complexity.
Can Lisa Su Close the Gap With NVIDIA?
AMD has made its ambitions clear: it wants to compete across the entire AI computing stack rather than supply individual components. Its progress will depend on continued hardware development, a stronger software ecosystem, reliable production, and partnerships with major customers.
NVIDIA remains a formidable competitor because of its established developer tools, broad product range, and existing data center relationships. AMD does not need to replace NVIDIA everywhere to make progress, but it must prove that customers can deploy its systems confidently and achieve meaningful results.
For Lisa Su, the opportunity is to make AI computing more competitive by giving businesses another credible platform. If AMD can combine capable chips, accessible software, and integrated systems, it could secure a larger role in the infrastructure powering the next generation of AI.
