A 20-year-old student was arrested after he allegedly drove his car at high speed in the wrong direction and attempted to run over police personnel conducting vehicle inspections under ‘Operation Kavach’ in Attapur, Hyderabad.
The accused, identified as Mohammed Fahad Uddin, a resident of Salar Jung Colony in Tolichowki, was arrested on Friday and subsequently remanded to judicial custody.
According to the police, Fahad was driving a Suzuki Fronx car bearing the word ‘GHOST’ and travelling from Mehdipatnam towards Attapur when he noticed police personnel conducting vehicle inspections along the road.
In an alleged attempt to evade checking, he suddenly reversed the vehicle and accelerated in the wrong direction, driving against oncoming traffic and endangering other motorists.
Police said the accused also drove dangerously towards officers stationed at the checking point, allegedly attempting to hit them with the vehicle.
The incident created panic among commuters and police personnel, prompting the officers to intervene. Attapur Sub-Inspector Srinivas Reddy and his team managed to intercept the vehicle and apprehended Fahad. The car was subsequently seized.
A case was registered under Sections 109(1), 281, 125 and 221 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. Following his arrest, Fahad was produced before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
In the wake of the incident, the Attapur police cautioned parents against allowing young motorists to engage in reckless driving, speeding or dangerous stunts that could endanger lives.
Police also warned motorists against using unauthorised lettering, decorative names or fancy number plates, citing the word ‘GHOST’ displayed on the accused’s vehicle. Officials said strict legal action would be initiated against motorists attempting to evade vehicle inspections by driving in the wrong direction or endangering police personnel on duty.
