Knicks' Jalen Brunson reveals where his 'Ring Night' Kobe Bryant sneakers came from originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
For the first time since 1973, the New York Knicks hung a banner in Madison Square Garden honoring a championship, and the team pulled out all of the stops for the special occasion.
The Knicks rocked special warm-up gear; their usual blue-and-orange uniforms were colored gold on the numbers and letters, and of course, each returning player and coach received their championship ring from the one and only Walt "Clyde" Frazier. The only problem? They were unable to pull out the win over the new-look Philadelphia 76ers.
Still, it was cool to see the Knicks making such an event of the championship occasion, and even some players had their own special individual accessory for the occasion. Finals MVP Jalen Brunson was no exception, and he rocked a special pair of Nike Kobe 6 PEs that were colored entirely gold.
Jalen Brunson's Kobe Bryant sneakers were a gift
Brunson revealed after the game that the one-of-a-kind basketball shoes were actually a gift from the Kobe team at Nike, and were created for the Knicks' ring night.
"Jalen Brunson said his Kobe 6 PEs were a gift and a bit of a surprise from the Kobe team. Said he’s super grateful for them and that he’s never wearing them again. One and done," shared The Athletic's James L. Edwards III.
These shoes are unlikely to see the light of day again. Brunson is sure to stash them away as a keepsake and as a souvenir of one of the proudest nights of his basketball career.
With all due respect to the Kobe team, the superstar point guard probably doesn't want to play in them again anyway. He had a rough season opener, shooting 6-of-19 from the field and 1-of-3 from three-point range.
Brunson is likely to be back to his regularly scheduled shoe programming the next time you see him on the court.
