According to the Army’s official recruitment information, the role is open to applicants within a specified age range, with candidates required to meet minimum physical fitness standards. However, meeting these requirements does not automatically mean that a foreign applicant is eligible to enlist, as nationality and other recruitment rules may also apply.
The British Army lists the Infantry Soldier role as open to applicants aged between 16 and 36. More specifically, candidates must be at least 15 years and seven months old when applying and no older than 35 years and six months.
Those seeking to join as Junior Soldiers can begin training at the Army Foundation College from the age of 16.
Prospective applicants from outside the UK should confirm the Army’s nationality and residency requirements before applying, as the age and fitness criteria alone do not establish eligibility for foreign nationals.
Fitness standards for infantry applicants
Physical fitness is a key part of the selection process. Regular Army applicants must meet the following standards:
- Mid-thigh pull: 76kg.
- Medicine ball throw: At least 3.1 metres.
- 2km run: Completed within 10 minutes and 15 seconds.
Army Reserve applicants face lower strength and throwing thresholds, although the required running time remains the same.
The Reserve standards include a 50kg mid-thigh pull and a medicine ball throw of at least 2.7 metres, alongside the 2km run in 10 minutes and 15 seconds.
Educational qualifications and starting salary
The Infantry Soldier role lists no formal educational qualifications as a prerequisite. This means applicants do not need specific academic credentials to meet the role’s stated education requirement, although they must still satisfy the other recruitment and eligibility criteria.
The starting annual salary for a Regular Army Infantry Soldier is £27,282 (about KSh 4.64 million).
Candidates should also allow between three and six months for the recruitment process, from submitting an application to beginning training. The Army notes that the actual timeline can vary between applicants.
Army Reserve offers part-time service
The Infantry Soldier role is also available through the Army Reserve, which allows members to maintain civilian employment while serving part-time.
Reserve Infantry Soldiers train during evenings and weekends, with a minimum commitment of 27 days per year. The Army lists additional income, military training and opportunities for overseas deployment among the benefits of Reserve service.
For Kenyans and other foreign nationals interested in joining, the key consideration is to check nationality, residency and other eligibility rules directly with the British Army before making plans. Meeting the published age, fitness and education requirements does not, by itself, guarantee eligibility to enlist.
UK Army outlines pay and entry rules for soldiers
TUKO.co.ke reported that the UK Army offers several roles that do not require formal educational qualifications, including positions in infantry, artillery and logistics.
The advertised opportunities require applicants to meet age, physical fitness and other recruitment criteria.
The Army also provides training that can help recruits gain recognised qualifications and develop practical skills during service.
