The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to conduct fresh party congresses to select new candidates in constituencies affected by the defection of some of its candidates to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The party said the move was part of efforts to maintain its preparations for the 2027 general elections despite the loss of some candidates.
The NDC disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director.
According to the party, the replacement process will be conducted in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 to ensure that credible and competent candidates emerge for the affected constituencies.
The party also urged its members and supporters not to be discouraged by the defections, insisting that the development would not distract it from pursuing its political objectives.
The NDC accused the APC of offering incentives to some of its candidates to persuade them to defect. However, it did not identify the candidates involved or provide evidence to substantiate the allegation.
Describing the departing candidates as lacking commitment to its ideals, the party maintained that their exit would not weaken its determination to challenge the ruling party in the forthcoming elections.
“These are the last kicks of a dying horse that has seen the handwriting on the wall of its imminent defeat,” the statement said.
The NDC further reiterated its commitment to improving governance, strengthening security and promoting economic prosperity across the country.
It expressed confidence in its political mission ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring, “A New Nigeria is possible. We can do it!”
