Seni Adetu, a former managing director and chief executive officer of Guinness Nigeria Plc, has taken a new step in his corporate career following his appointment as an independent non-executive director of the proposed JPMorgan Merchant Bank Nigeria Limited.
The appointment, approved by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), brings Adetu’s extensive experience in multinational business leadership to JPMorgan’s planned merchant banking venture in Nigeria.
His appointment follows the CBN’s approval-in-principle for JPMorgan to establish a merchant bank in the country. The proposed institution must still meet the outstanding regulatory requirements and obtain a final operating licence before commencing business.
Adetu’s move into banking governance marks a new chapter in a career spanning more than three decades in the private sector, with leadership experience across consumer goods, beverages and marketing communications in several African markets.
Before his latest appointment, he built his career through senior roles at major multinational companies, including Coca-Cola International and Diageo, the global beverage group whose portfolio includes Guinness.
A chemical engineering graduate of the University of Lagos, Adetu later obtained a Master of Business Administration in Marketing from the same institution, equipping him with a combination of technical training and commercial expertise.
He began building his corporate career at John Holt Plc before moving into the international beverage industry, where he held leadership positions across West and East Africa.
In 2001, he became managing director of Coca-Cola English West Africa, based in Ghana. His career subsequently advanced to Diageo, where he was appointed managing director and chief executive of Guinness Ghana Plc in 2006, becoming the first African to occupy the position, according to his professional profile.
He later became group managing director and chief executive officer of Diageo East Africa, based in Kenya, in 2009.
These appointments placed him in leadership positions across different African markets, providing experience in managing business operations, corporate strategy and commercial growth within multinational organisations.
In 2012, Adetu became managing director and chief executive officer of Guinness Nigeria Plc. He also served as executive chairman of Diageo Brands Nigeria.
He left the Guinness Nigeria leadership position in December 2014, after which he continued his involvement in business leadership and advisory work.
Beyond the beverage industry, Adetu founded First Primus West Africa Limited, an integrated marketing communications company with subsidiaries including Ogilvy Nigeria Limited and Algorithm Media Nigeria Limited.
He has also worked as a leadership coach and facilitator on the Chief Executive Programme at Lagos Business School, extending his involvement in executive development and corporate leadership.
His professional recognitions include being named a top-performing chief executive across Diageo International in 2008 and being runner-up for the Forbes/CNBC Business Leader of the Year award in East Africa in 2012, according to his professional biography.
Adetu’s experience in corporate leadership is complemented by his exposure to board governance. He joined the board of Fidelity Bank Plc as an independent non-executive director on April 28, 2016.
His appointment to the board of the proposed JPMorgan Merchant Bank Nigeria Limited adds another financial services governance role to his professional career.
As an independent non-executive director, his responsibilities are expected to centre on board oversight, governance and strategic guidance rather than the day-to-day management of the proposed bank.
His background in multinational business leadership offers experience across strategy, organisational management and African markets, although the precise contribution he will make to JPMorgan’s Nigerian venture will depend on the bank’s governance arrangements and priorities.
The proposed merchant bank represents JPMorgan’s planned expansion into Nigeria’s financial services sector. Its establishment remains subject to the completion of the CBN’s licensing requirements.
For Adetu, the appointment extends a career that has moved from corporate management in the beverage industry to business advisory work and board-level responsibilities, placing him among the executives joining the governance structure of JPMorgan’s proposed Nigerian banking operation.
