Alexandr Wang is getting another public vote of confidence. A post on X this week endorsed him as the right person to lead Meta Superintelligence Labs, singling out his strategic thinking and his obsession with talent.
How Wang ended up running Meta’s AI ambitions
Meta Superintelligence Labs, or MSL, launched on June 30, 2025. CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled it in an internal memo that reorganized the company’s AI efforts under one roof.
Wang was named Chief AI Officer and head of MSL that same day. The appointment came alongside a deal that made it hard to miss.
Meta invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI, the data company Wang co-founded. That money bought a 49% stake and valued Scale AI at approximately $29 billion.
Wang stepped down as Scale AI’s CEO to take the job. He still sits on the company’s board.
MSL includes several subgroups, among them TBD Lab, which focuses on frontier models. In July 2025, MSL named Shengjia Zhao as Chief Scientist.
The results that make the praise stick
In April 2026, MSL launched the Muse Spark model family, the first of its Muse models.
In September 2026, Meta rolled out the Muse AI app. It climbed to No. 1 in the Apple App Store. Meta’s stock rose by nearly 20% in the aftermath.
Wang has framed MSL’s goal as building what he calls “personal superintelligence.”
Who Wang is, and why Meta bet on him
Born in 1997, Wang co-founded Scale AI in 2016, at age 19. The company started out in data labeling. By 2021, at age 24, Wang had become the world’s youngest self-made billionaire.
The X endorsement leaned on two traits: strategic thinking and talent focus. Wang has prioritized what the research describes as talent density alongside aggressive investment. Talent density is the idea that a smaller team of exceptional people beats a larger team of good ones.
What this means for Meta and the AI race
For Meta shareholders, Wang’s tenure has turned a very expensive hire into something that looks more like a strategic win. The $14.3 billion Scale AI investment was a statement of intent. The Muse launches gave it a return that investors could actually see.
The nearly 20% stock gain after the Muse app’s debut suggests the market is willing to reward Meta’s AI spending when that spending turns into products people download and use.
Wang’s continued seat on Scale AI’s board is another detail to watch. Meta owns 49% of that company, so the relationship between the two will likely draw attention as both keep growing.
