The National Democratic Congress governorship candidate in Bauchi State, Ibrahim Muhammad Kashim, has resigned from the party with immediate effect.
Mr Kashim announced his resignation in a statement on Monday, pledging his continued commitment to the state.
“My dear supporters, brothers and sisters, and the good people of Bauchi State, I wish to formally inform you that I have resigned my membership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), effective 16th October 2026,” the statement read.
The politician, who noted that his decision followed careful reflection, said it did not in any way diminish his commitment to the political struggle for the betterment of the state.
“My conviction remains that our dear state deserves purposeful leadership, a stronger economy, greater opportunities for our youths and women, improved security, and a future in which every citizen can live with dignity and hope,” the statement added.
He, however, did not disclose his new political alignment.
Mr Kashim promised to communicate to his supporters the next phase of the struggle and the direction to take.
“Until then, I urge you to remain calm, steadfast, and united in our collective determination to build the Bauchi State of our dreams. Our mission is bigger than any political party; it is about the future of our people and the destiny of our state and country,” he added.
Mr Kashim’s resignation comes a few months before the 2027 general election and may weaken the NDC’s preparations and momentum for the 2027 governorship race in the state.
His departure from the NDC creates uncertainty for loyalists who had mobilised around his candidacy under the party’s platform.
