Former England batter Kevin Pietersen has proposed making Test cricket free to watch at venues that struggle to attract spectators. His suggestion comes as South Africa hosts Australia in a three-match Test series, with sparse crowds in Durban and Gqeberha becoming a talking point.
In a post on X on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, Pietersen argued that cricket boards should generate revenue through franchise competitions rather than relying on ticket sales at struggling Test venues.
“Test Cricket in places that struggle for crowds should make it FREE to enter!” Pietersen wrote.
“Boards should make their money off their franchise tournaments.”
He added:
“There is no way that Durban and PE have made enough money off ticket sales to justify no one there watching.”

His comments come during the second Test at St George’s Park in Gqeberha, following Australia's 214-run victory at Kingsmead in Durban in the opening match.
Fans debate ticket prices and match scheduling
Pietersen's proposal has prompted mixed reactions from cricket supporters. Some backed free entry as a way to bring spectators back to the grounds, while others argued that ticket prices were not necessarily the main problem.
Several fans pointed to scheduling, suggesting that matches starting on Sundays or falling on working days could make attendance difficult. Others argued that Test cricket needed better promotion and stronger connections with local communities.
One supporter suggested a compromise: free entry to grass embankments, with modest fees for seats in the stands. Another proposed giving schools and senior citizens free access to dedicated areas.
The debate highlights the challenge of attracting spectators to a five-day format, especially when fans must balance cricket with work and family commitments.
Test cricket's attendance problem remains unresolved
The discussion has also raised questions about how cricket boards balance commercial interests with the need to protect the game's longest format. Pietersen has argued that franchise tournaments, particularly T20 competitions, should provide a stronger revenue stream.
However, free admission is not the only solution being discussed. Better scheduling, school initiatives, and more affordable ticket options have also been discussed.
South Africa's second Test against Australia runs from 18 to 22 October at St George's Park, while the third Test is scheduled for Newlands in Cape Town from 27 to 31 October. Whether Pietersen's proposal gains support remains to be seen.
The wider challenge for cricket administrators is finding ways to bring supporters back to Test grounds without undermining international cricket's financial sustainability.
