The Indiana Fever’s 2026 season ended abruptly after they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the reigning champions, the Las Vegas Aces. And as the dust settles, criticism of the Fever’s future has continued to grow.
During her exit interview, star guard Kelsey Mitchell reflected on the season and the battles she faced off the court over her association with Indiana and teammate Caitlin Clark, which she indicated could affect her decision as an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
“Showing up every day to compete for fans that may or may not like you is hard,” Mitchell said, via The Athletic. “I think this organization is unbelievable, man, but I think that when it comes to, like, really trying to be yourself, it hasn’t always been easy.”
The backcourt duo of Mitchell and Clark was prolific this year, with both guards in MVP conversations. Losing Mitchell would obviously be a huge blow, but she may not be the Fever’s only concern.
Annie Costabile and Brian Hamilton of The Athletic spoke with players, league executives, and dozens of agents about how the league perceives the Fever, who they described as “the molten-hot core of women’s professional basketball.” And many believe the franchise’s path is clouded.
Hostile Environments
According to several agents, many players around the WNBA dread playing against the Indiana Fever.
“One agent said clients regularly disable social media accounts before and immediately after games against the Fever because of the increase in toxic messages they say they receive. Not all accounts clearly identify themselves as Fever fans. Harassment of Black players, in particular, has included racist messages following games against the Fever,” Costabile and Hamilton wrote.
Another agent reportedly told The Athletic that clients have complained about being called the [N-word] at Fever games “multiple times.”
“Online is always going to be worse,” this agent said, “but I’ve never had clients tell me they’ve been called certain names at any other arena other than Indy.”
The Fever told The Athletic that they had not received any complaints about racial slurs from spectators at home games.
More notably, Aces star A’ja Wilson was involved in an incident with a Fever fan during Game 2 of the first-round series and received a technical foul. Outraged, Wilson had a lot to say in her postgame press conference.
“I try to play my game, keep it pushing. But if I’m just walking, because I had just got the foul, I’m chillin’, and I see a man come at me, taking steps towards me and pointing at me, I don’t give a damn what you said; I don’t give a damn how you said it, the tone. That is unacceptable. You don’t step towards me,” Wilson said.
Sophie Cunningham
Sophie Cunningham was at the center of negative media attention this season for the Fever, as her comments regarding transgender athletes in women’s sports sparked a season-long media frenzy.
“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,'” Cunningham said, via ESPN. “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
Cunningham later doubled down on her comments, making matters worse for her and the team.
“I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense, and I think I’ll always believe in that. I think it’s really important to protect children, and that’s little girls who are also involved in that category. I stand on what I said.”
Cunningham is now a free agent, and one agent told The Athletic that they don’t believe she is worth the risk. But the same agent believes some team will sign her anyway, purely for her media draw.
“Because of the money. People come watch her. Not because she’s the greatest basketball player. Because of what she does.”
The Caitlin Clark Effect
Clark has been one of the biggest influences in women’s basketball and also one of the most talented. But because of her large notoriety, players and even teammates can get lost in her orbit.
“There is such a microscope on me,” Clark said during her postseason news conference. “And that kind of comes with everybody else I’ve been teammates with, whether that was my time at Iowa, whether that’s been here. It comes with a lot of really great things. And then at times there can be some negatives.”
Though she acknowledged her stardom, many agents believe the Fever have been slow to address these issues because the team doesn’t want to alienate fans or risk losing revenue.
The Fever have the entire offseason to address any locker room issues they’ve incurred, but the question of star guard Kelsey Mitchell’s return may be the least of their worries if they’re aiming at title contention next year.
