PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating the livestreaming of an attack on a teacher by a 16-year-old student at a private school in Kuching.
Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said MCMC would issue a statement on the matter in due course.
"At this time, MCMC is investigating this issue.
"If we can recall, social media platforms have also failed to prevent the livestreaming of acts of violence in other countries.
"We will leave it to MCMC to investigate and make a statement in due course," he said in a post-cabinet press conference.
Fahmi was asked whether the government had sought an explanation from Meta over Facebook's failure to detect or stop the livestream when it began.
He was also asked whether Malaysia would take firmer action, including on security, to prevent violent crimes from being broadcast live.
In the incident at 8.03am on Wednesday, a female teacher sustained injuries to her hand.
Initial information indicated that the student had brought firecrackers to the school before allegedly attacking the teacher with an axe.
The student remains hospitalised and is under investigation.
Acting Sarawak Police Commissioner Deputy Commissioner Saifullizan Ishak said police were investigating the suspect, subject to his medical condition and the advice of medical officers.
