KARACHI: Several police officials, including a deputy superintendent of police (DSP), were injured during a clash between two police teams in Karachi over the custody of suspects in a short-term kidnapping case, officials said.
The two teams reportedly engaged in repeated scuffles throughout Tuesday night after a dispute erupted over the arrest and custody of the suspects.
According to sources, the Karachi police chief had assigned the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) the task of arresting the suspects. Acting on locator information, the SIU’s Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) team conducted a raid in North Nazimabad and arrested the suspects.
Upon receiving information, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan police station arrived at the scene with a police team and attempted to take the suspects into custody.
The SHO maintained that his police station had already been working on the case and that the suspects’ arrest fell within its jurisdiction.
However, the SIU-CIA team refused to hand over the suspects to the local police, triggering a confrontation. Police personnel from the concerned police station allegedly attacked SIU-CIA officials, leading to a physical altercation.
In the ensuing scuffle, a DSP and the head moharrir of Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan police station were injured during a counter-altercation involving SIU personnel.
The SIU-CIA team subsequently took DSP Minhaj and the head moharrir into its custody. Following the intervention of senior police officers, both officials were released and returned to their police station.
Senior officers later intervened to resolve the dispute between the two police units. The suspects in the short-term kidnapping case were eventually handed over to Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan police station, officials said.

According to reports, police faced resistance during the raid, leading to a heated exchange between the station house officer (SHO) and the residence’s security staff. Video footage reportedly shows Mumtaz Jakhrani attempting to prevent police from entering the house.
The police team later left the premises following the confrontation with the security personnel.
The family alleged that the raid had been carried out at the behest of MNA Aijaz Jakhrani.
