Running 4 Paws fundraiser Lee Harker is recovering after being knocked down at a road crossing in Spain, with his mission to build a rescue home for elderly dogs now facing a delay.
Lee, who set out to run approximately 4,500 kilometres across six European countries to raise money for dogs in need, has been home recovering since Monday, according to an update posted on the Running 4 Paws Facebook page. EWN previously reported on Lee’s 4,500km challenge to help rescue dogs in Spain. The accident happened in Spain, after he had already completed five countries without incident.
Although Lee is recovering, the update said he was still not fully recovered from being knocked down. Supporters have been sending messages wishing him a speedy recovery as he works towards completing his ambitious challenge.
The latest setback means his planned journey may take longer than expected, but the hope is that he will be able to finish the challenge in early 2027.
Running 4 Paws: a mission to help elderly dogs
Lee’s challenge began with a simple ambition: to give older dogs a safe and loving place to spend the final years of their lives. His original plan was to run from Skagen in northern Denmark to Tarifa in southern Spain, passing through Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France before reaching his destination.
The journey covers around 4,500 kilometres, with Lee initially hoping to complete it in approximately four months. The money raised will go towards creating Paws4Ever, a specialist rescue home for elderly dogs. The project is planned in collaboration with Paws Xaló Dog Rescue in Alicante province, which is led by founder Jayne Webb and her daughter Natasha, together with a team of volunteers. Readers can find out more about the Paws4Ever elderly dog rescue project.
The proposed sanctuary will provide care for older dogs that have been abandoned, surrendered or need a safe home in their final years. EWN previously explained how Lee’s 4,500km journey aims to save Europe’s elderly dogs.
Lee has also stressed that he is covering the costs of his challenge himself, including expenses associated with running and walking the route. This means donations can go directly towards achieving the rescue project’s goal.
Donations still needed for Paws4Ever
Despite the accident, fundraising continues, and supporters are being encouraged to donate or share the appeal to help keep the project moving forward. Lee’s determination to complete the journey reflects his long-standing passion for animal welfare and his desire to give elderly dogs the care they deserve.
The Running 4 Paws Facebook page will provide further updates on his recovery and plans to resume the challenge. Those wishing to support the mission can donate to Lee Harker’s Running for Paws fundraiser through GoFundMe.
Every donation will help bring the proposed Paws4Ever rescue home closer to reality, giving older dogs the chance to enjoy comfort, safety and affection when they need it most.
