Denver-based Frontier Airlines has cut seven routes from
Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) this year, as the airline redeploys its aircraft on more lucrative routes. O'Hare is the world's busiest airport by the total number of flights, while
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) holds the title of the world's busiest airport by the number of passengers served.
With all seven route reductions already having taken place earlier this year, O'Hare now sits as the airline's 14th busiest airport, tied with Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI). This is according to the number of weekly departures, based on data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company.
Three Routes Were Cut In The First Quarter Of 2026
Frontier axed three routes from O'Hare between January and March, as the airline cancelled its services to
Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP), Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) and
New York JFK Airport (JFK). The latter route cut comes as the airline completely withdraws from the busiest airport serving New York, and as a result refocuses its operations to Newark (EWR) and LaGuardia (LGA).

For Frontier, its low-cost fare base and additional costs for ancillary services like baggage, seat selection, and onboard snacks or drinks are popular for budget-conscious travelers. The table below details the first three routes cut this year.

Four Frontier Routes Were Terminated From O'Hare In May
The month of May saw the biggest change from Frontier's route cancellations from O'Hare. This was when the airline suspended its nonstop flights to
Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS),
Miami International Airport (MIA), and Raleigh–Durham International Airport (RDU).
As suggested by INC, Frontier made these changes as part of the airline's strategic network overhaul, which sees the airline terminate unprofitable flights and shift away from underperforming and low-frequency routes. Frontier is the fourth busiest operator at O'Hare with an average of 91 weekly departures, a far cry behind the leading legacy carriers at the airport:
United Airlines (4,509 weekly departures),
American Airlines (3,530), and
Delta Air Lines (304).

Frontier's network will now sit at 13 destinations from O'Hare. These include Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth, Orlando, Denver, Houston Intercontinental, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Cancún, San Juan, Baltimore/Washington, and Phoenix.
A Look At Frontier's Most Served Airports
Frontier's busiest airport is that of
Denver International Airport (DEN). The airport sees a total of 437 weekly departures (for October), just marginally ahead of its second busiest hub at
Orlando International Airport (MCO). Just three airports in the airline's network register more than 400 weekly departures, with Atlanta the third busiest hub.
