The Continent’s Mood Today
Latin America enters the weekend with a tight chest. Brazil’s knife-edge runoff, the aftermath of a political killing in Guatemala, and labour protests in Mexico all weigh on the week.
Markets echoed the nerves: the Ibovespa fell 1.15% on Thursday and the dollar rose 0.40% against the real.
Brazil – Election Nerves and Legal Heat
Brazil is not sleeping well. The October 25 runoff between Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro stayed too close to call on Thursday, with Datafolha showing the two candidates tied at 50% of valid votes each.
Lula’s campaign filed an electoral-court action on Wednesday to remove Flávio’s ticket and make him ineligible for eight years, alleging abuse of economic power and favourable treatment by Meta and X, Poder360 reported.
The deeper why is trust. The campaign has already accepted Flávio’s demand for both candidates to open banking and phone records, a sign that each side expects the other to hide something.
In Paraná, traditional leaders and a former minister under ex-president Fernando Collor backed Lula, while Governor Ratinho Junior and Governor-elect Sergio Moro went with Flávio, InfoMoney reported.
For a foreigner holding Brazilian assets, the practical risk is another week of high volatility and legal surprises around Sunday’s result.

Mexico – Pay Rises and Blockades
Mexico’s public health workers are not satisfied with an 8% deal. Dissident IMSS workers announced intermittent blockades on Thursday and a national march for October 30, demanding a 10% rise and the removal of union leader Rafael Olivos.
President Claudia Sheinbaum reviewed health-sector modernisation with governors this week, even as the labour protests continued in the capital.
Sheinbaum has so far ruled out removing the union leader, and the protesters say they will not negotiate without his resignation.
The standoff is a reminder that public-sector patience is finite.
For a foreigner in Mexico, avoid central CDMX on the announced blockade days and expect health administration disruptions.
Guatemala – A Lawyer Killed on a Football Pitch
Guatemala’s mood is raw grief and anger. Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa, a lawyer and former anti-corruption prosecutor, was shot dead at a sports complex in Guatemala City on October 17, police confirmed.
Many Guatemalans see it as part of a pattern of intimidation of people who pursue corruption cases.
Foreign investors hate this kind of news. It confirms the security risk premium already built into doing business in Guatemala.
For anyone living there, the immediate effect is a more visible security presence and a colder civic mood.
Argentina – Stocks Follow the Global Sell-Off
Argentina’s mood is cautious. The S&P Merval fell 1.5% to 97,993 points on Thursday as global shares sold off.
That fall gave back almost all of Wednesday’s 1.6% gain. The index is back at the level it closed on Tuesday.
For a foreigner holding Argentine assets, the practical read is that Thursday’s fall moved in line with the region and was not a local shock.
Chile – A Defensive Day on the Exchange
Chile’s mood is defensive. The S&P IPSA fell 1.88% to 10,780 on Thursday, the steepest drop among the region’s main stock indices.
The slide followed a global sell-off that hit every major Latin American market. The peso also weakened, with the dollar up 0.46% to 986.2 pesos.
For a foreigner holding Chilean assets, the day showed that global risk, not local politics, drove the market.
Ecuador – Arrest of a Former Candidate
Ecuador woke to a political shock. Former presidential candidate Luisa González was arrested on Thursday in a money-laundering investigation tied to her 2023 campaign, which her party calls political persecution.
Prosecutors link the case to the earlier “Caja Chica” inquiry into alleged cash from Venezuela for that campaign.
The arrest touches a raw nerve in a country split over how far the state should go against its political opponents.
For a foreigner with assets in Ecuador, the practical risk is sudden political instability and legal unpredictability around opposition figures.
The Shared Mood
Across the continent, the shared feeling is tension between big promises and thin patience. Brazil’s election, Mexico’s blockades, Guatemala’s killing and Ecuador’s arrest all speak to institutions under strain.
Thursday’s market sell-off is a reminder that the region’s mood is also shaped by global money, not just local politics.
For foreigners living or investing here, the weekend is a test of nerves: hold steady, keep your papers and your plans flexible, and know that Latin America is showing its full emotional range this week.
What Prediction Markets Say
Traders on Polymarket, a prediction market where people bet real money, put Flávio Bolsonaro’s chance of winning the 25 October runoff at 76.8 percent and Lula’s at 23.5 percent at 11:34 p.m. ET on Thursday, 22 October. About US$192.3 million had been traded on that market.
Kalshi, a prediction market regulated in the United States by the CFTC, the federal derivatives regulator, showed 76 percent for Flávio and 24 percent for Lula at the same time. These prices are bets by traders, not polls, and they can move within minutes of a debate or a new survey.
The official result will come from Brazil’s electoral court, the TSE.
Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.
