Arsenal have been dealt a significant injury blow after forward Bukayo Saka was reportedly ruled out for a minimum of six weeks, with concerns that his absence could extend to eight weeks following a thigh injury sustained during the club’s 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League.
The England international was forced off just 10 minutes into Wednesday’s encounter after appearing to suffer an injury to his quadriceps muscle. The setback has raised concerns over his availability for a crucial period of Arsenal’s domestic and European campaigns. Blueprint reports
According to reports published on Friday, early assessments suggest Saka could spend at least six weeks on the sidelines, with the possibility of an absence lasting up to two months.
However, the precise recovery timeline remains uncertain as Arsenal await further medical examinations to establish the full extent of the injury.
Manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that the winger will miss Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Everton, while additional scans and specialist opinions are expected to provide greater clarity.
Arteta concerned after Bayern Munich setback
Saka’s injury occurred during Arsenal’s 2-2 Champions League draw against Bayern Munich, forcing the Gunners to make an early change in a match that ended with both sides sharing the points.
Arteta admitted after the encounter that the initial signs were worrying, particularly because of the pain Saka experienced and his difficulty moving comfortably after sustaining the injury.
Speaking ahead of the Everton fixture, the Arsenal manager said further medical examinations were necessary before the club could provide a definitive assessment.
“We need a few more scans and opinions from the specialists,” Arteta said.
He added that the amount of fluid around the affected area had made it difficult to determine the full extent of the damage, prompting the need for another MRI scan.
The uncertainty means Arsenal must wait for a clearer medical picture before establishing when the forward could return to training and competitive action.
Key fixtures at risk
If the reported six-to-eight-week recovery period is confirmed, Saka could miss a substantial number of Arsenal matches across the Premier League, domestic cup competitions and Champions League.
Among the fixtures potentially affected are the Premier League clash against Liverpool at Anfield on November 1 and subsequent matches during November.
His absence could also affect Arsenal’s preparations for their European commitments and the demanding run of domestic fixtures approaching the end of the year.
The injury is also a concern for England, with Saka potentially unavailable for the national team’s scheduled November UEFA Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain.
The eventual number of matches he misses will depend on the severity of the injury, his response to rehabilitation and the medical team’s assessment of his readiness to return.
Arsenal are unlikely to take unnecessary risks with the forward’s recovery, given his importance to the team and the possibility of aggravating the injury through a premature comeback.
Arsenal face challenge replacing influential forward
Saka’s potential extended absence presents Arteta with a selection challenge because of the forward’s contribution to Arsenal’s attacking play.
The winger has developed into one of the club’s most influential players, combining goalscoring ability with creativity, pace and the capacity to create opportunities from wide positions.
His movement and link-up play have made him a central figure in Arsenal’s attacking structure, while his experience in major domestic and European matches has added further value to the squad.
Noni Madueke, Eberechi Eze and teenage winger Max Dowman are among the options available to Arteta as he considers how to manage the right side of the attack.
The manager may also have to adjust his tactical approach depending on the opposition and the availability of other attacking players.
Although Arsenal possess alternatives, replacing Saka’s influence over an extended period will be a considerable challenge, particularly during a congested fixture schedule.
Recurring fitness concerns raise questions
The latest setback also renews concerns about Saka’s recent injury record.
The England international has experienced several fitness problems in recent seasons, including hamstring, hip and Achilles issues that have interrupted his availability for club and country.
His workload has frequently been a subject of discussion because of the demands placed on a player who regularly features in high-intensity matches for Arsenal and England.
Arteta has previously spoken about the need to manage players carefully amid an increasingly crowded football calendar, although the precise cause and severity of Saka’s latest injury will depend on medical findings.
For Arsenal, the priority will be to ensure that the 25-year-old receives the appropriate treatment and rehabilitation rather than rushing him back before he is fully fit.
Arsenal await definitive medical assessment
While reports indicate that Saka could be unavailable for six to eight weeks, Arsenal have yet to establish a definitive return date publicly.
The additional scans and specialist assessments will determine the extent of the quadriceps injury and help the club plan his rehabilitation.
A shorter recovery would offer encouragement ahead of the busy December schedule, while an absence closer to eight weeks could rule him out of several important fixtures.
For now, Arsenal must prepare to face Everton and navigate the coming weeks without one of their most important attacking players.
Saka’s recovery will be closely monitored by the club and England, with supporters awaiting confirmation of the injury’s severity and a clearer indication of when he could return to action.
