Pakistan and Sri Lanka have been fined 10% and 5% of their match fees, respectively, for maintaining slow over-rates during the opening match of the ODI tri-series at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the fines after Pakistan were found to be two overs short of the required rate, while Sri Lanka were one over behind after time allowances were taken into account.
Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which covers minimum over-rate offenses, players are fined 5% of their match fees for every over their team fails to bowl within the allotted time.
Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi and Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis pleaded guilty and accepted the sanctions, avoiding formal hearings.
The charges were brought by on-field umpires Asif Yaqoob and Wayne Knights, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, and fourth umpire Faisal Afridi.
Pakistan opened its tri-series campaign with a 37-run victory over Sri Lanka on Sunday, October 18.
After Mendis chose to field first, Pakistan scored 305 all out in 49.5 overs, led by Salman Ali Agha’s 107 off 90 balls. It was his fourth ODI century.
Babar Azam scored 45 runs, while debutant Saad Baig contributed 39 and Hasan Nawaz added 37. Eshan Malinga was Sri Lanka’s leading bowler with four wickets for 46 runs, while Asitha Fernando claimed three wickets.
Chasing 306, Sri Lanka was bowled out for 268 in 48.1 overs. Pavan Rathnayake scored 79 runs, while Janith Liyanage added 60.
The pair shared a 119-run partnership for the fifth wicket, briefly putting pressure on Pakistan before the hosts’ pace attack regained control.
Shaheen led Pakistan’s bowling attack with three wickets for 55 runs. Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, and Faheem Ashraf took two wickets each.
Salman Ali Agha was named Player of the Match for his century as Pakistan secured its first win of the tri-series.
