The Washington Commanders face growing uncertainty surrounding Jayden Daniels’ recurring elbow injury, raising concerns about the quarterback’s availability for the remainder of the 2026 NFL season. Although he has returned to the field, medical warnings about the possibility of another dislocation could complicate the team’s plans moving forward.
Daniels suffered his latest left elbow dislocation during a Week 2 matchup against Dallas, marking his second such injury in less than a year. He missed two games while consulting specialists before deciding against surgery and returning with a protective brace. His comeback offered the Commanders an important boost, but the repeated injury has created questions about whether the joint can withstand the physical demands of professional football.
The most troubling development involves assessments from NFL doctors who reportedly believe another dislocation could occur if Daniels continues playing. ESPN insider Adam Schefter relayed the concerns, although the physicians involved had not personally examined the quarterback. That distinction matters because their warnings represent medical opinions about potential risk rather than a definitive diagnosis or a guarantee that another injury will happen.
Daniels showed flashes of his dynamic ability in his return against the New York Giants, completing 17 of 25 passes for 199 yards while adding 103 rushing yards and two touchdowns. His production demonstrated that the brace had not immediately eliminated his effectiveness as a passer or runner. However, his willingness to scramble and absorb contact makes his situation especially concerning, given how frequently mobile quarterbacks expose themselves to physical punishment.

The Commanders must now balance the immediate benefits of having its franchise quarterback available against the possibility of a more serious setback. Daniels’ mobility is central to the offense, helping him escape pressure, extend plays and create opportunities when receivers are covered. Limiting his running could reduce that threat, but allowing him to play without carefully managing contact could leave the team vulnerable to another injury.
Ultimately, the medical concerns warrant attention, but another dislocation is not inevitable. Washington’s priority should be to monitor Daniels’ recovery, evaluate the risks with qualified medical professionals and avoid rushing decisions simply because the team needs him on the field. Protecting his long-term health may prove more important than any short-term advantage gained by keeping him in the lineup.
