With physical media making a comeback, I've recently been inspired to upgrade many of my old DVD and Blu-ray movies to 4K UHD. At first, I focused on newer releases from the 2000s, such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Casino Royale, but I've since started digging into older films. As a big fan of Westerns, I was blown away by how many of the classics have been released in 4K, and how downright incredible they look.
Watching a Western from the '60s or '70s in 4K, compared to DVD or even Blu-ray, is a night-and-day difference. The picture quality is so good that many of these movies look like they were shot yesterday, not 60 years ago.
Here are four of the best Westerns available on 4K UHD that I think are worth adding to your collection, plus a few honorable mentions.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
One of Clint Eastwood's best Western films
Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) was my first introduction to the Western genre. Seeing Clint Eastwood as the iconic gunslinger Blondie in 4K for the first time, after years of watching the film on DVD, was an eye-opening experience. It really showed me just how incredible a 4K scan of an older film can look.
There are two 4K UHD releases of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. The first is a 2021 Kino Lorber release that lacks HDR10, while the newer 2025 Arrow Video release supports both HDR10 and Dolby Vision. The Kino Lorber version is easier to find in the US because it's available on Amazon, and despite lacking HDR10, the colors are still true-to-life.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is the final film in Sergio Leone's Dollar Trilogy, which also includes A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More. Both films also have brilliant 4K UHD releases worth checking out, but since the stories aren't connected, if you had to choose just one to pick up in 4K right now, I'd go with The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
The Magnificent Seven (1960)
An Old West take on Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai
Whenever I think of The Magnificent Seven (1960), it's hard not to hum its iconic main theme, composed by the legendary Elmer Bernstein. But beyond its incredible score, the film boasts a stellar cast featuring Hollywood legends like Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, and James Coburn, an unforgettable story based on Akira Kurosawa's 1954 Japanese classic Seven Samurai, and John Sturges' brilliant direction.
Fortunately, The Magnificent Seven has an excellent 4K UHD release from Shout Factory that brings this Western to life like never before and supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision. I especially love how much more the colors pop in this release than on older DVD releases, and, of course, as a 4K transfer, it has razor-sharp detail as well.
Another great John Sturges film I have to shout out is The Great Escape. While it's not a Western, it's a fantastic World War II movie that has also received an exceptional 4K UHD release.
A 2016 remake of The Magnificent Seven is also available on 4K UHD. While I thought it was an okay film, nothing will ever come close to the charm and grittiness of the original 1960 version, in my view.
The Searchers
One of John Wayne's best performances
As a big fan of John Wayne, I have to mention at least one of his films here, and my pick is The Searchers (1956). It's widely regarded as one of John Wayne's greatest Westerns, with him playing the lead, Ethan Edwards, as he relentlessly searches for his kidnapped niece in the Wild West. Warner Bros. released it in 4K UHD in 2024 as part of the Warner Bros. Archive Collection.
It's hands down one of the most stunning 4K releases of an older film I've ever seen, with superb clarity, eye-popping color, and Dolby Vision and HDR10 support. Compared with the past DVD and Blu-ray releases of The Searchers, this 4K UHD blows them out of the water and is the ultimate way to see this film. It lacks a Dolby Atmos track, but it includes a DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio track with split-channel audio that sounds crisp for a 1956 film.
Once Upon a Time in the West
Another masterpiece from Sergio Leone
I know I've already mentioned Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, but another one of his Westerns that I absolutely love and have to put in the spotlight is Once Upon a Time in the West (1968). Released after Leone wrapped up the Dollars Trilogy in 1966, it's widely regarded as a masterpiece of cinema and the Western genre. The film stars Charles Bronson as a mysterious gunslinger who helps defend a widow's valuable land from a ruthless band of outlaws.
Paramount finally released the film in 4K UHD in 2025, and it's a gorgeous transfer that blows the Blu-ray release out of the water in terms of clarity and detail, while leaving past DVD releases in the dust. It also supports Dolby Vision and HDR10, giving the film's colors and contrast a meaningful boost.
Both Once Upon a Time in the West and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly will be available in the new Sergio Leone Masterworks 4K UHD collection coming out in November for $150, which also includes A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More in 4K.
If you understandably don't want to spend that much right now and are just looking to grow your 4K collection piece by piece, as I've been doing for the past year, you can grab Once Upon a Time in the West on 4K UHD by itself on Amazon currently for $20.
