A cutting-edge defense technology company has successfully completed the acquisition of a Canada-based company specializing in advanced autonomous underwater and remotely operated systems for the maritime domain.
Israel-based Elbit Systems’ acquisition of International Submarine Engineering Ltd. is aimed at boosting underwater vehicle innovations.
Underwater technologies will further strengthen maritime solutions
“This acquisition marks another milestone in Elbit Systems’ strategy to expand its offerings in the naval domain,” said Bezhalel (Butzi) Machlis, President and CEO of Elbit Systems. “Combined with our existing capabilities in naval electronic warfare, autonomous systems, naval precision munitions and maritime mission systems, ISE’s underwater technologies will further strengthen our position as a global provider of comprehensive, integrated maritime solutions.”
Headquartered in the Vancouver area, ISE is a high-technology company engaged in the development and manufacture of undersea vehicles, including Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), as well as computer control systems and robotics. With more than 50 years of experience in subsea robotics, ISE has delivered over 250 underwater vehicles to customers in more than 20 countries worldwide, according to a press release.
Elbit Systems’ naval portfolio includes unmanned surface vessels, underwater systems, integrated command-and-control (C2) suites, electro-optical and sonar systems, communications and electronic warfare technologies. Through its subsidiaries and global centers of excellence, Elbit Systems delivers proven naval capabilities supporting missions ranging from coastal security to blue-water operations, as per the release.
The addition of ISE’s underwater autonomous technologies is intended to expand Elbit Systems’ capabilities in underwater Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), Mine Counter Measures (MCM) and Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), further strengthening the Company’s end-to-end maritime offering.
Unlike remotely operated vehicles, which are typically controlled through a communications link, AUVs can undertake planned missions with varying degrees of independence. This distinction makes autonomy particularly useful where communication with a submerged platform is difficult.
Expanding its naval technology portfolio
ISE’s established expertise in underwater vehicles, robotics and computer control systems offers Elbit Systems an opportunity to broaden the range of maritime technologies it can develop and integrate.
Modern naval operations increasingly depend on the coordination of multiple platforms rather than the capabilities of a single vessel or sensor. Aircraft, surface vessels, underwater vehicles and shore-based command systems can each contribute different forms of information and operational support.
Elbit Systems’ acquisition of ISE fits this wider industry trend towards integrated autonomous operations. The company’s existing maritime portfolio includes its Seagull unmanned surface vessel, while ISE adds further expertise in autonomous underwater vehicles and remotely operated systems.
For Elbit Systems, the purchase of ISE represents a further step in expanding its naval technology portfolio. By adding a company with a long record in underwater robotics, Elbit gains access to specialist expertise that complements its existing surface, sensor, communications and command-and-control capabilities.
