Aizawl, Oct 13: Mizoram Travel Fest 2026 opened in Aizawl on Tuesday with the state pushing its vision of becoming India’s “Winter Capital” and building a sustainable, community-driven tourism economy.
Jointly organised by the Mizoram Tourism Department and the Union Ministry of Tourism, the three-day festival brings together tourism stakeholders to explore opportunities in culture, adventure and nature tourism.
Tourism Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar, who attended the inaugural ceremony as chief guest, stressed the importance of ensuring that local communities benefit from tourism growth.
“For us, tourism is not simply about bringing visitors into Mizoram. It is also about ensuring that the benefits reach the people who make Mizoram special,” he said.
Mizoram recorded over 6.7 lakh tourist arrivals between January and August 2026, a 51% increase from the corresponding period last year. The state has mobilised nearly ₹680 crore in tourism investments since 2023, supported by improved connectivity, including the Bairabi–Sairang railway line.
Mizoram aims to attract 12 lakh tourists annually by 2030 and 20 lakh by 2047. It also plans to develop 10 Culture, Adventure and Nature tourism circuits covering 40 destinations.
The Winter Capital campaign will showcase Christmas celebrations, cultural festivals, music events and local cuisine to promote year-round tourism.
