A Calgary main street could be in store for major upgrades, with plans to make it greener, safer, and more pedestrian-friendly.
A preferred design for 10th Avenue SW in Sunalta has been chosen, outlining plans for wider sidewalks, more trees and greenery, public art, and new spaces for people to gather.
The redesign would cover 10th Avenue SW between Bow Trail and 14th Street SW, transforming the street into a more welcoming space for residents, visitors, and local businesses.
According to the City, the street currently has narrow sidewalks interrupted by driveways and utility poles, while limited tree coverage leaves little shade during the summer.

The project aims to make it easier and safer for people to walk along the street, access local businesses, and connect with nearby parks and transit. Plans also include accessible crossings, seating, planting, and opportunities for patios and community events.
The City also wants to give the street a stronger identity that reflects Sunalta’s character and create more opportunities for people to spend time in the area instead of simply passing through.
The redesign is part of Calgary’s Main Streets Program, which develops streetscape plans based on community feedback, technical analysis, and financial considerations. The goal is to create public spaces that better support local businesses and bring people together. The Bridgland Main Street project is currently in its final stages.

The preferred design comes after two rounds of public engagement and a co-design process which involved input from residents, business owners, community members, and City staff.
While the design has been selected, the City has not yet approved construction funding. If the City allocates funding in a future budget, construction could begin as early as 2028.
The project is currently in the design phase, which is expected to continue through 2027.
