The non-teaching staff unions of Yobe State University (YSU), Damaturu, have threatened to embark on industrial action over alleged failure of the school management to implement an agreed salary adjustment for their members.
The unions, comprising the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), said they might resort to a warning strike if their demands were not addressed.
The Chairman of SSANU, Yobe University Branch, and Chairman of the Joint Action Committee (JAC), Comrade Ibrahim Liman, disclosed this while expressing the unions’ dissatisfaction with the delay in implementing the salary agreement.
Liman said the unions were concerned that teaching staff had reportedly benefited from similar salary adjustments while non-teaching employees were yet to receive theirs.
He described the situation as unfair, arguing that non-teaching staff played vital roles in the administration and daily operations of the university and deserved equal consideration in the implementation of agreed welfare packages.
According to him, the planned industrial action represents a joint position of SSANU and NASU under the Joint Action Committee, stressing that the unions would not hesitate to take action if the outstanding issues remained unresolved.
The union leader called on the university management and other relevant authorities to intervene urgently and ensure the full implementation of the salary agreement to prevent an escalation of the dispute.
He warned that failure to address the concerns could disrupt administrative and technical services at the institution, potentially affecting its smooth operations.
The threat comes amid ongoing efforts to implement the 2026 salary agreements involving university staff unions and the Federal Government, including agreements covering non-teaching employees.
As of the time of filing this report, the university management had yet to make its position on the unions’ threat publicly available.
